| Masthead Banner Made with MyBannerMaker.com! Use our Free Myspace Banner Maker! Click Here! Jon was born in Fall River, Massachusettes on June 4th, 1953. His father John, was a career man in the U.S.Army until Jon came along, and his mother, Gladys, was a house wife who took occassional part time work as a waitress. Jon began playing drums at age 11, at which time he was entering junior high school. He joined the school orchestra and marching band playing drums and assorted percussion instruments. He also joined the school chorus AND glee club. Jon was not much into sports, though he did play with the schools' marching band during football seasons. He spent all of his time creating things and participating in musical events and activities almost on a daily basis. Besides his musical talent, Jon had a knack for taking things apart to see how they worked. (Even if he couldn't get it back together). Aside from the school year activities, the summer months were just as active. Jon joined up with a drum and bugle corp, playing drums in national competitions. Jon developed his skill as a drummer very quickly and tutored other new drummers in the group .... he had turned 12. Jon was also a very active church member, singing with the choir every Sunday and Wednesdays' rehersals were also a voice lesson for Jon. I think Christmas was his favorite time though. He loved going out on the cold snowy evenings singing door to door with different groups from school or church. It was a good life back then. The great depression had passed, the wars were over.... and..... oh yeah...... the Beatles landed in America! It was the night the Beatles performed on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1964, that Jon came face to face with more than just a television screen.......... His talent came face to face with inspiration....... and there is born a Dream. There were 3 other boys that lived in Jons' neighborhood who attended the same school as Jon did and they too had good voices and soon began singing Beatles' songs A"Capella with all the harmonies intact. They did make a ht with all the girls in the nieghborhood, that's a fact. It was late 1965 when the group split up. Jons' family were moving to Providence, Rhode Island. It was there that Jon began putting his first drum kit together. And for the next couple of years, practiced, playing along with all the new rock music that was developing. In 1968, family situations ended Jon up in boarding school for his remaining years in high school. The school was "St. Andrews" in Barrington, Rhode Island. With all the new friends Jon made there and all the new ones off campus, he was inevidably introduced to some good drugs... great sex... and kick ass rock & roll. Jon left high school in his junior year, in 1970. By then he had met several musicians from Providence and Boston and was ready to play with a band. After a few auditions for some local bands as a drummer, Jon decided to form his own band, and wanted to play guitar and also wanted to have more control over the songs they played. He didn't feel comfortable with the songs the other bands were playing and Jon wanted to play original songs in his song rep (which was pretty much taboo back then.) You had to play what was on the Juke Box or you didn't work.... period! Jon was still persistant about playing originals and even got into progressive rock material covering songs by Yes, Genesis, E.L.P... bands like that. Well, Needless to say the band didn't get a lot of work; you just couldn't dance to this music. "Chalice", the name of the band, consisted of Bob McVay on drums: Ronnie Alied on bass: Claude Day on guitar and Jonathan. A female singer, Gail Vick, would be added to the band toward its' end in 1973, when Jon married the singer, and the band just fell apart. During the 2 and some years Jon was struggling with Chalice, he met a man named Charles Sweeney. Charles became Jons' personal manager and booking agent. He got the band a few gigs and also booked Jon as a solo artist who played a more folk rock acoustic guitar and got noticed at the collages Charles was booking Jon at. Charles was also responsible for the meeting with the singer, Gail. And by 1974, all the members of the band, including Charles, had gone their separate ways and Jon resigned himself to become the working class hero, just in time for the arrival of his first daughter, Moira. Jon, being crafty and good with his hands, became a cabinate maker for a display company. His music was confined to a basement studio for a while and later found some factory space where he set up a small studio. By 1977, Jon had divorsed, relocated his studio to a Colonial style dwelling in another part of town and began auditioning for bands as a drummer. He met a band named "Eternal Funk", a motown band with a male / female duet front who hired Jon as a sound and light tech and to play some keys from the sound booth. Jon was also working with members of a very popular band in New England called Molly Magregor. Two members of Molly left their band to form a new band, "Trollop". It wasn't very long when Jon found a band called "Out To Lunch", a southern rock band. Jon auditioned and was included into the band the next day. After eight months of gigs every weekend, problems with other band members caused the breakup of the band and by the end of 1979, Jon was ready for a change. {{ MORE TO COME--- UP NEXT--- "ABACAB" THE GENESIS SHOW }} 7-28-08 jk Use our Free Myspace Banner Maker!
