| Jean-Marie HAUSER
Biography
*
Native of Metz (France), he is 8 when his father – who is a bandmaster of the city at that time – gives him his first drum. Key moment that sees the birth of a real passion for this instrument in which Jean-Marie Hauser will not be long in distinguishing himself (he wins each and every national drum competition until he is 15 years old!).
One day he comes across a record of the Gerry Mulligan Quartet and he immediately falls in love with jazz music. Some good friends of his manage to get him a secondhand drum kit and although he is still attending a secondary school, he does his drum practice every day and listens to the Voice of America (Willis Conover) every night … In parallel, his parents enroll him at the Metz Conservatory where he studies violin and the rudiments of music for 3 years. Nevertheless, he keeps on with his drums and even starts playing in local jazz combos.
In 1962 – he is almost 19 - he takes the plunge and tries his luck in Paris. It does not take long until he plays with the greatest jazzmen of the capital since he starts out in trio at the “Caméléon” along with musicians such as Marc Hammeler and Guy Pedersen, later on with Rhoda Scott ; he also plays at the famous “Blue Note” in the Trio of tenor sax Michel Roques (with Michel Gaudry), and also in the Henri Renaud Trio ; he appears at the “Trois Maillets” in the Dominique Chanson’s Quartet, the Bill Coleman Quintet, the Memphis Slim Trio, the Stéphane Guérault/Benny Vasseur Quintet, the Jazz Guitares Bach, the Mozart Jazz Trio and in the Claude Bolling Big Band (and Trio, along with Pierre Michelot).
In 1970, he is urged by many musicians and artists to become a studio musician and he makes his entrance in these very exclusive circles. He starts recording for Charles Aznavour with whom he tours throughout the world for 5 years. He also registers for many other renowned singers such as Jean Ferrat (5 albums), Michel Delpech, Michel Fuguain, Yves Montand, Mort Schuman,Joe Dassin, Nicole Croisille, Sylvie Vartan, Barbara, etc. He is engaged for the Dionne Warwick and Melba Moore “Europ Tour”, he accompanies Nina Simone in a series of TV programmes dedicated to her, plays in the Paris Red Cross Gala Big Band with Sammy Davis as Guest Star, and he accompanies Ray Charles in the Pierre Porte Big Band at the Monte-Carlo Casino.
Jean-Marie Hauser is regularly engaged to take part in the top and most popular French TV Variety Shows presented by, among others, Maritie and Gilbert Carpentier, Jacques Chancel, Michel Drucker (“Champs-Elysées”), Nagui (“Taratata”), Jacques Martin(“Music and Music”), etc.
He is also asked to play in film music recording sessions : Z, Moonraker, Playtime, Moi y en a vouloir des sous, Les Chinois à Paris, Borsalino, Trafic, Tout le monde il est beau, tout le monde il est gentil, L’Homme en colère, La Gueule de l’autre, L’Alpagueur, Bons baisers de Hong Kong, Femme peintre, among many others.
Finally, after a rich, colorful and busy career, Jean-Marie Hauser returns to his first love: the jazz music. He appears in some Parisian jazz clubs where he meets the pianist player William Lecomte. He decides to make an album with him and invites other talented and open-to-new-horizons jazzmen to take part in this beautiful musical and human experience of which he speaks as follows:
“I looked forward to it for so long … Of course it implied that the project was interesting enough to make everybody feel involved. There is absolutely no “pretention” in this achievement, only the desire of enjoying ourselves as well recording as performing on stage. Actually, should not music be the sole musician’s concern?” ..
