Born Michael Edward Kolar on May 31, 1967, in Cleveland, Ohio. Michael began his years of adolescent stages of development in Newburgh Heights and later the old historic 'Slavic Village' - The Fleet Avenue Area. Michael attended elementary school at local parish St. John Nepomucene and then went on to attend high school at Cleveland Central Catholic's Foreman campus.

Michael Kolar's fascination with art & the martial arts both began when he was at the tender age of nine. Mesmerized by martial arts legend Bruce Lee after seeing 'Enter The Dragon'. Meanwhile, he simultaneously became fascinated with the magic & illusion of fantasy Artists such as Frank Frazetta, Ken Kelly & Boris Vallejo. Michael's prolific talent as well as his skill remain a dazzling unquestionable array of technique, talent and genius. Ranging from simple to the intricate & complex, which is then transformed into the most original & destined to become one of the most 'influential Martial Arts Instructors' of the modern era. Michael Kolar re-wrote the rules for Martial Arts ( Self - Defense & Fighting ) teaching in general.
Michael Kolar is a Martial Arts Master who has redefined what developing a blindly fast technique with a variety of self - taught ( mimmicked & brilliantly inventive ) over - the - top performance of martial art standards could be. In the process this makes Michael Kolar a Master enraptured by setting the template that was said to be impossible - the core of which is the formulation of new style & school of martial art - 'The Art of Kinjiru', i.e, ( Kinjiru Academy).

ORIGIN OF THE ART OF KINJIRU
I've studied different arts and I've noticed that most if not all
of them favor having you shadowbox the techniques. This is the
traditional way - the old way ! Which is practicing forms in sequence ;
because it's external complex stuff.
The key point I want to make is that when we are shown a technique or a form we can all copy that technique. But to copy and imitate something that's obvious is not being able to to know what that movement really means. You can know many things but to have the internal aspect means that now : "You are making the way", i.e. , understanding what that technique is used for and how to apply it in multiple - multiple applications.
You must be able to see that one form or application of the technique is one way and therefore is a limitation ! The new way is to teach the use of the practitioners 'tools' with a partner. And the key is to be shown all of the various applications of these complex movements. So that the idea here being - that when we engage in practicing the 'martial arts' we have a teacher like myself. Because - the fact is that most if not all martial arts schools do not teach the 'concept' that - this could be ; a throw ; a lock ; a reversal ; a takedown ; a choke ; a strike ; a counter. It can be many things.
I want you to understand that I intend to expand your 'knowledge' as well as your 'awareness' of the 'martial arts' in this context. Because, in a street altercation or a 'self - defense' situation - you will not remember the techniques. So, therefore ; if you are shown how out of all your basic techniques - comes all of the complex applications. Now you are 'understanding' how it can be many things. This way you are taking the 'concept' and using it in its 'totality' - and 'internalizing' it for yourself.
So, I have found that principally all of the techniques ( basics ) helps in understanding many other ways in which a single technique can be used. And now in retrospect referring back to when I mentioned that ; "You are making the way", what I meant was that - each move or technique sets up each additional move and makes the way for next move. Now through with this attitude & training methodolgy - you'll see that all techniques are set up in this way. Because, when you understand the 'principle' that is behind the technique, then it doesn't matter which technique you use - you will then see that it comes out of universal 'principles' which are used in endless variations of movement or techniques !
And it is at this point that you'll come to the realization of the concept of 'totality' that resides within the martial arts ; which is based upon the same basic 'idea' or 'concept'. Then you will no longer see according to 'style' or 'form'. You will now see the 'fomlessness' of formulated movements and the abstract 'shapeless - invisibility' that lies within the stealth of your own movements ! Remember, that when we talk about this idea in - The Art of Kinjiru - we in large part are coming to the understanding of the internal aspect of the martial arts. And the segway to this 'internal realization', is founded on the principle of - the practitioner being required to engage or move in close against the attacker in an upright position. Then use the
various hand & foot maneuvers which are employed.
You see in this style : The Art of Kinjiru - we emphasize the idea of forward pressure. But we must'nt fool ourselves ; because our 'instinct' is to 'evade' so that we will not be injured. So, therefore - it's much more instinctive in man's 'nature' to try to 'escape' or 'evade'. But, to be in close close ( in - fighting ) we are out of danger. Because, when you are in close now your adversary has to move and get set to strike ( attack ). So, as long as you 'maintain' pressure on your attacker keeping him 'off - balance' ( his center of gravity or his vortex ) ; and do not allow him to get set you're safe from being injured.
That's important - remember that ; because - that's the critical difference between 'self - defense' versus martial arts that have become 'sport', i.e., Kumite & full contact Karate. And we 'make the way' into ( close - range ) through 'striking'. In the art of Kinjiru empty - hand techniques are very 'concise' and 'stripped' of ( wasted motion ). A significant amount of 'striking' and 'grappling' is used in this art - most of the concepts are based upon getting your opponent off - balnce in order to to make use of 'sweeps' or 'takedowns' ; whereby we 'trap' our attacker 'momentarily' and 'loosely' so that that practitioner of the art of Kinjiru is not committed to 'applying' his ( bodily pressure ) to the point that he can no-longer have enough 'leverage' to continue the methods of self - defense.
Again ( striking ) is used on an assailant before the practitioner begins adapting him or herself and changing their range ; where we will then go into 'intricate' maneuvers or the techniques which are useful for grappling ; locking ; throwing as well as choking. As the practitioner finishes one technique with a takedown or a follow - up one 'immediately' covers and assumes the on - guard position. Therefore there is resultant fact of the overkill principle which is prevelant in the art of Kinjiru - due to the awarenes that one or two blows will 'never stop' an assailant. Therefore, repeated follow - ups and techniques are incorporated for safety purposes !

FILIPINO KALI

Kali, also known as Escrima. Filipino warriors known as Escrimadors, developed a highly effective Martial Art System. In the fifteenth century under Magellan the spaniards invaded the Filipino's. The spaniards lost three times. The Filipino Warriors had exceptional skill and discipline and faith in their native art of Kali, that their ability to survive was extraordinary ! The Filipino Art of Kali is now preserved, practiced & taught in form by using wooden sticks ( made of rattan or bamboo ) in order to mimic the movements once used.
In the Art of Kali, the practitioner ( student ) will primarily be taught the following:
Sensitivity drills
Development of coordination & focus
Empty Hand Skills ( self - Defense )
known as : 'Panantukan' ( Filipino Boxing )
Intricate footwork & low line leg techniques, known as : 'Pananjakman'
Practical Self Defense techniques against Single stick or double sticks, such as : nerve strikes to the hand ; disarms ; locks & chokes.
Also the use of knees & elbows, which is very similar to 'Thai-Boxing'
The ancient art of Kali also teaches the practitioner or student to be skilled in self - defense against multiple opponents as well as single opponents
SHAOLIN CHIN-NA
Shaolin 'Chin - Na' means to seize and to hold or control. The art of 'Chin - Na' covers many and varied defensive as well as offensive techniques from fundamental theory to highly advanced practice & application. Chin - Na techniques can be learned by any one even by someone without any previous martial arts experience. In addition to the grabbing techniques found as fundamental in Chin - Na, which are used to control or lock an opponents joints so that they cannot move, and prevent the attackers fighting ability, Chin - Na also includes techniques utilizing 'pressure points' as well as highly effective & efficient striking techniques.
WING CHUN KUNG-FU
'Simple but effective !'
One of the most popular Kung-Fu styles practiced 'world-wide' is the art of Wing Chun. The founder of the style was a buddhist Nun who had been taken in by the 'Shaolin Monks'. She'd created a style of Martial Art much less complicated than other styles or systems of 'Self - Defense' and much more simple & efficient ( effective ). The Art of Wing Chun emphasizes technique rather than power or strength. This art is renowned for its simplicity & its subtlety in 'redirecting force' through its hands on ( no frills ) use of training methods such as :
Very Quick ( reflexive ) hand & arm
forms and maneuvers. ( Sensitivity ).
Plus, the overall simple & direct approach
for Women and Children, is very evident.
Finally, the student is required to
perfect and master only three easy to learn
forms, which are based on natural movement.
KOREAN HAPKIDO
Hapkido ( Hop - Key - Do )
Definition - Hapkido, literally means, the way of coordinated power. Hapkido is a Korean Martial Art, it combines techniques from Karate, Aikido and Judo. The definining feature of Hapkido is the joint locks as well as the spectacle characteristic of its sensational throws ! Developed in the 1940's by its founder Grandmaster Choi Yong Sul. who'd learned martial arts first in Japan at Daito - Ryu Aiki - Jujutsu, an ancient form of Jujutsu that was taught & practiced by the Samurai. Upon Choi Yong Sul's return to Korea, he'd modified techniques he learned & studied ; in order to defend against particular types of attacks, and borrowed heavily from many other systems & styles. A famous student of Choi Yong Sul was Ji Han Jae who'd continued to develop the art and was very instrumental in bringing Hapkido to the western world.
During this time Ji Han Jae met Bruce Lee, who was very impressed with the techniques of Hapkido. Ji Han Jae coached Bruce Lee, who then incorporated Hapkido into his own Art & Philosophy of Jeet Kune Do. Ji Han Jae appeared in a fight scene in Bruce Lee's last film 'Game of Death !' The techniques taught in the art of Hapkido place strong emphasis on minimizing the need for strength, by focusing on the use of leverage, timing, circular motion, and also practical applications. Hapkido is not a sport & has no Katas or set forms ; instead its focus is adaptation. The Art of Hapkido is a much more complete Martial Art in that it consists of : both hard & soft style deflection techniques, throws, takedowns, groundfighting, extensive joint locking techniques, and weapons training ( short stick, single baton, sword, knife, rope & bo staff ). The movements or techniques found in Hapkido are very fluid and smooth. Hapkido is a very effective martial art, and is an excellent method of self - defense ; as such it can be a most beneficial method of training ( Martial Art Form ).
AIKIDO
Aikido is one of the most subtle and sophisticated of the martial arts. And therefore a uniquely effective discipline for efficiently defending yourself against any form or type of an attack. 'Aikido' - combines practical self - defense movements derived from sword & spear fighting ; Jujutsu and other ancient methods or martial art forms. Aikido as a training method of self - defense is equally effective against one or multiple attackers.
INDONESIAN PENTJAK SILAT
Pentjak Silat is an Indonesian Martial Art and began originally as a weapons style of combat. Pentjak Silat has borrowed much from its nearby neighbors of China and India, combining the fighting styles of these regions into their own philosophy& methodology, the end result is a style which contains weaponry both long & short as well as bladed. Silat also features techniques consisting of fighting range, therefore, it will readily be apparent that the art of Silat has many & varied techniques such as : kicking, striking, sweeping, pressing & grappling. Pentjak Silat was founded approximately 1,000 yrs. ago and was popularized by Dan Inosanto who is the founder of his own system of Silat known as Maphilindo Silat, as the synthesis of Dan Inosanto's vast experience in the Kali & Silat styles found in the Philipines, Indonesia & Malaysia.
Pentjak Silat's open hand techniques are based upon skill executed and practiced around the use of weaponry. When fighting without a weapon, all parts of the body are to be used for striking. Students learn to calmly avoid attack and then they are taught how to defend themselves against an assailant / attacker with a weapon when they are without a weapon. Pentjak Silat's attacking & deflecting techniques are based upon skill & graceful footwork, which is developed over time. Due to the nature of this arts graceful footwork it is often mistaken as a dance.

Michael Kolar, founder & master
of the art of 'Kinjiru', returns home
to the historic district of 'Slavic Village'.
Where he celebrated his youthful devel-
opment in St. John Nepomucene and
Cleveland Central Catholic's foreman
campus, Master Kolar recalls the
many & varied influences upon his
character development in his earlier
years in Slavic Village, i.e., the area
had a certain resonating essence
about it ; the Catholic upbringing,
my friends & our shared interest in
music & the arts , the entire area at
that time seemed to generate feelings
of a pinnacle youthful quality. Almost
in the similitude of Ray Bradbury's
imagery of autumn in one of his books,
says the 39 year old martial arts instructor.
Who was born in Newburgh Hts.,
( son of the former Mayor Edward L. Kolar ),
and who brought to pass his celebratory
return home this past August as he particpated
in the 'Slavic Village Harvest Festival'. By
bringing to the communty the pragmatic
approach to his art and philosophy of 'Kinjiru'.
Kinjiru Academy is a school of the arts, ( see

where the youth in this area can go for
developing their minds & their bodies,
in an intimate class setting and structural
environment. As Kinjiru Academy's teachings
are based upon eight different marial art
styles : Filipino Kali, Wing Chun Kung Fu,
Ninjitsu, Indonesian Pentjak Silat, Aikido,
Hapkido, Kenpo and Shaolin Chin - Na.
So, therefore, it is a very ecclectic approach
to training. Simply stated it is much more
complete and efficient for self - defense
situations as well as circustances.
Without the limitations of a one
dimensional approach - ( a this is the
only way attitude ) - I've been in martial
arts ever since I was nine years old and
I have come to the conclusion that one
needs to utilize what is most useful.
So therefore, my approach to teaching
is very effective because, the intent
purpose is first and foremost intrinsically
based upon ethics & a moral code of
conscience. Most if not all upheavals
within a society or social group is
rooted in fact upon crisis in self -
esteem. So, I first point out to each
individual student their intrinsic worth
& value by a personal approach to
teaching - everyone is an individual
first and a part of the organicism
of social structure second. That
way my students are'nt confused
by peer groups or the media
telling them who they should
be or who they are not based
on a false sense of self because,
that just is not right. All human
beings need to come to know
who they are ! Not 'externally'
but rather 'internally'' once
this level of 'self awareness'
reveals itself to the individual
they no longer have this crisis
in individual self - esteem.
So, through the arts that I
teach be it martial art, drawing
& illustration neo-classical
guitar or acting classes - my
students are learning how to
honestly express themselves
without the fetters of a false
sense of pride. But rather,
through a form of that which
is intrinsically part of them -
artistic individual expression.
Through which comes the 'self
- discipline' of coming to the
knowledge of who one really is
or is about to become, and
that's important. Because,
the youth are our future
leaders, and if they are
caught up in the confusion
of the crisis of their own
identity they'll have no
respect for themselves
or others, then they're lost.
Therefore, I can help them
find themselves, teach
them to think for themselves
morally & ethically. With a
form of expressive discipline
that they and their parents
will come to honor & revere
; as an integral part of nurt
-uring their intelligence. As
well as a methodology for
developing and sustaining
a disciplinary code of
conscience,i.e.,
morals and ethics.
Because, it works not
only fo the individual
interested in art or the
martial arts, but for the
individual's life as a
human being.
