Kitsch Catch explore l’univers insolite des gladiateurs du ring : masques et paillettes, voltige dangereuse et pseudonymes improbables sont inscrits au programme d’une découverte artistique et culturelle haute en couleurs.
Présentée par l’association La Gamelle Publique, l’exposition Kitsch Catch propose un dialogue entre des documents d’archive (affiches, photos, vidéo), des objets issus de la culture populaire et les créations d’une trentaine d’artistes contemporains inspirés par cette étrange discipline située aux frontières du sport de combat et du théâtre. En confrontant des pièces issues d’Europe, du Mexique, du Japon et des USA, l’exposition dévoile différents visages du catch et met en évidence des thématiques communes : identité et anonymat, morale et sentiment religieux, violence et simulacre, érotisme, lutte sociale et politique. Le catch enfin démasqué ?
Exposition produite par la Gamelle Publique avec la maison Folie Wazemmes de Lille – présentation du 25 avril au 8 juin 2008 dans le cadre de la Quinzaine de l'Entorse - Ring Arts (www.entorse.org) - et le MIAM : Musée International d’Art Modeste de Sète – présentation de décembre 2008 à février 2009.
Commissaires d'exposition : Barnabé Mons et Pascal Saumade.“Kitsch Catch” is an exhibition dealing with wrestling. Born in the 1920’s in the USA, wrestling appears as an odd discipline mixing sport and comedy. It spread all over the world during the XXth century and developed many different faces : “wrestling” in the USA and in England, “Lucha Libre” in Mexico, “Catch” in Europe and “Puroresu” in Japan. The Kitsch Catch exhibition explores the rich visual world of wrestling. It shows pieces of archive (posters, costumes, photos), elements of popular culture (toys, ex-voto, record covers…) and the works of 40 artists dealing with the subject.
