Da’Ville “On My Mind”
“Music connects the world, but reggae dancehall music is a language by itself. It makes you listen and move at the same time. Music is my medium of expression and most people can relate to my experiences and vibe with me” - Da’Ville
Da’Ville and his music are definitely on the minds of many listeners, which is why his new album “On My Mind” is befitting for the title. Released internationally on May 15th, 2007, this impressive album is a collection of current and upcoming love ballads, which cleverly captures the emotions of the all –familiar lovesick feeling. It adds range and a diverse sound to the new generation of lover’s rock which showcases the multitude of this new lover’s rock sensation’s talents. The success of this album held the 1 position (3wks) for the top 10 best selling reggae albums in New York and 1 position for the top 15 reggae albums in South Florida. It has already spun off four 1 chart topping hit singles and songs such as “Give Thanks for What You Got,” produced by Arif Cooper for Fresh Ear Production and “Yesterday,” produced by O.Thomas and J.Brown for Fashozy Records are also charting as potential 1 hits. The chart-topping remixed single “On My Mind feat. Sean Paul,” held 1 position on many music charts both locally and internationally. In addition to the collaboration with Grammy award winner Sean Paul on love song, “On My Mind,” which fuses the essence of dancehall with lovers’ rock, this solid album also has collaboration with the legendary Marcia Griffiths on love song, “All My Life,” with an outstanding production team between himself, O.Thomas and J. Brown for Fashozy Records.
Born Orville Thomas on January 24, in Kingston Jamaica, he was raised by his grandmother Ms. Feama who emphasized the importance of the principles of education and religion. Da’Ville attended church on Sundays and sang in the church choir. “I was always singing, even from a little boy.” As a teenager, he continued to sing in the St. Peter Claver Church choir and performed at local school functions. Later, he wrote and recorded his first single under the influence of his father.
With the emergence of groups like Boys 2 Men, Silk, Shai and Jodeci, Da’Ville was inspired to form a group of his own. After several attempts, he continued to develop his craft until he graduated from high school. Upon graduation from Norman Manley Comprehensive High School, Da’Ville worked in a factory. Shortly after, he was introduced to a newly formed group which later became ARP (A Raw Perspective). “Even though I once thought about being an accountant or a manager, music was always my greatest passion.”
After working with former group members of ARP, Da’Ville, in 2001, signed with Penthouse Records as a solo artist under the management of Donovan Germaine. He recorded the hit singles: “Cruzin,” and “All My Life,” the latter of which was recorded with then label mate, Marcia Griffiths. “All My Life,” was nominated for the 2001 Reggae Soca Awards. After several years, Da’Ville departed from Penthouse Records to explore other opportunities within the music industry.
Aside from Da’Villes’ vocal abilities, he is a great songwriter, composer and producer. His early 2005 chart topping single “In Heaven,” produced by himself, O.Thomas and N.Palmer for Nap Musiq provided evidence of his production talent. He adds to his credits several music videos and TV commercial appearances as well. With evidence of an expanding fan base, Da’Ville continued to record hit singles for producers such as: J. Brown, Fire links, Stephen McGregor, Don Corleon, Preston Anfoy, Wee-Pow (stone love), Beres Hammond, Robert Livingston (Big Yard Music), and many more. Da’Ville’s unstoppable energy and determination kept him in the studios creating irresistible melodic lyrics that everyone would soon love. He continued to perform and develop his stage performances while laying the groundwork for his most recent accomplishments.
In August 2005, Da’Villes’ debut album “In Heaven” produced and co-produced by O.Thomas, J. Brown and R. (Shams) Browne respectively, for Fashozy Records, was released in Japan by Avex Entertainment Group. The success of this album charted within the 2005 top ten best selling reggae albums for Japan Tower Records and lead to numerous tours throughout Japan, Jamaica and the Caribbean Islands. As a result, in 2006, Avex released his second album “Can’t Get Over You,” produced by O.Thomas and J.Brown for Fashozy Records. Both cd’s spun off three chart topping hits “In Heaven,” produced by O. Thomas and N. Palmer for Nap Musiq, “Can’t Get Over You,” and “On My Mind,” produced by O. Thomas and J. Brown for Fashozy Records. Fans became captured by his tantalizing lovers’ rock lyrics as the media attention mounted. Consequently, his reputation as the “Big Bad Singer,” exploded in Jamaica and abroad.
The year 2006 was undeniable a stellar year for Da’Ville. The smash hit singles “Can’t Get Over You,”, “On My Mind,” and newly released “This Time I Promise” were all chart toppers. The single “Can’t Get Over You,” which was within the top ten reggae count down in Jamaica, held 1 position in Aruba & 2 position in New York , which was included on VP 2006 Reggae Gold. “On My Mind,” held the 1 position on several charts including Jamaica (5 weeks), New York (3 weeks), Florida, Europe and Africa. After an electrifying performance in New York City early October, which solidified his title as “Big Bad Singer,” he was profiled in the New York Times. In December he was honored with Stone Loves “Singer Of The Year” award 2006.
In spring of 2007, after an extensive European tour, Da’Ville made several appearances in North America. He performed at The Best of The Best Concert in Florida, the 26th International Reggae & World Music Awards held at the world famous Apollo Theatre where he was nominated in several categories and won Most Improved Entertainer for 2006. In addition, Da’Ville made a special guest appearance at Madison Square Garden and he also performed at Irie Jamboree V before leaving for yet another Japan, and Caribbean tour.
Undoubtedly, 2007 has been another successful year for Da’Ville. He has found his niche and a home with the newly formed label and production company Fashozy Records. “I’ve been building my career for a long time and always feel like I had to play a role or something but finally now I can just be me; myself, yeah, and express myself freely.” Certainly he has earned the respect and recognition he sought for so long while remaining humble and grounded. There is definitely love in this industry for Da’Ville and his music. He has surely set the pace for his career as a star.
