I'm a writer, a illustrator, a sculptor, a collector... of monsters. I collect them in every shape (books, toys and action figures, movies and videos, press cuttings, illustrations, news scattered on Internet and histories told from people in flesh and bones)... But I don't collect the monsters which Goya speakes about, they are born from the sleep of the human reason, I mean, serial killers, politicians and harlots. But the monsters - survivors from other worlds, other times, other realities - than hiding from the animal-man's eye, they make legendary the places, and magical dreams. The monsters, shortly, that they distinguish the panic, even the sacred awe, from the pure and simple fear. The monsters that - also when they are not more than corpses stranded on a beach - they still offer us the chance to dream, and to believe in other reality than the one - bleak and filth - that we are daily facing... Sono uno scrittore, un illustratore, uno scultore, un collezionista... di mostri. Li colleziono in ogni forma (libri, giocattoli, film e video, ritagli di giornale, quadri e illustrazioni, notizie sparse su internet e racconti fatti da persone in carne e ossa)... Ma non colleziono i mostri di cui parlava Goya, quelli che nascono dal sonno della ragione umana e si manifestano come serial killer, politici e veline. Bensì i mostri - sopravvissuti di altri mondi, di altri tempi, di altre realtà - che celandosi agli occhi dell'animale uomo, rendono leggendari i luoghi e magici i sogni. I mostri, insomma, che distinguono il timor panico, persino il timor sacro, dalla pura e semplice paura. I mostri che - anche quando non sono nulla di più che carcasse arenate su una spiaggia - ci offrono ancora una possibilità di sognare, e di credere in "altre realtà" meno squallide e patetiche di quella che quotidianamente affrontiamo... |
