About Me

FIND YOUR OWN SPACE (album review)

'Charlie North's first solo album is the work of a man set free. From the opening strings of Exit Strategy to the multi-layered finish of Flying Home this is a celebration of space, freedom, and tranquillity. Recorded over the period of a year Find Your Own Space draws on a diverse selection of recordings compiled and recorded during Charlies travels around the world.

In retrospect it should be of no surprise that an artist with such a diverse musical history should choose to embrace such a broad range of influences. However, what is truly striking is the way in which Charlie manages to create such a cohesive sound. Clearly comfortable with the technical demands of such a project he has wasted no time in juxtaposing live ethnic instruments with complex techno rhythms. In fact tracks such as Time Will Tell and Exit Strategy clearly flourish from this multitude of influences, teasing and surprising the listener at every turn.

In a tired and bloated genre Find Your Own Space manages to strike forward into new territory, in doing so Charlie North has created an accessible album that never forgets the basics of melody and structure. This maybe Charlies first studio album but its in his extensive experience as a producer that this album ultimately gains its mature and masterful resonance. This is an excellent debut from an artist clearly intent on pushing the boundaries.'

My name is Charlie North and I’m a producer and musician based in Yorkshire, England. I specialise in electronic, chillout, and ambient music. I started playing in bands and performing at concerts from an early age.

After school I took up residence as studio manager with the dance music label UDG. Based in Leeds (and distributed via Eastern Bloc) this extremely successful time saw the label release a series of highly influential underground hits, partly (I hope) because of my involvement.

I later moved to London and became involved in a variety of studio sessions, engineering and producing at Mayfair, Swanyard, and Abbey Road studios (and no I didn’t get to meet the Beatles - I’m not that old!!). I was however lucky enough to be one of last musicians to ever perform live at the original Marquee Club.
