| "Yes, we may be hidden by "rags" but we have something they'll never have" (Hand in Glove)Somewhere between Downtown Los Angeles and Long Beach, California there lays a decrepit garage in one of the most decrepit cities in the United States. In Compton, CA, amidst the sirens, gunshots, helicopters and train rumblings from the Alameda corridor, you can hear the sound of 5 individuals united by blood, friendship and most important a common love for the music of Morrissey and The Smiths. Conceived in 2004 in the midst of a tragedy, the idea of These Handsome Devils was formed by Fabian (drummer), Johnny(guitar) and Daniel(vocals). After shuffling through several musicians to no avail (and the opening gig coming up in 2 weeks) the band needed some talented musicians soon! Daniel knew his brother Omar (who had a common love for MOZ and The Smiths) would be a perfect addition to the band but was concerned Omar wouldn't have the time considering he was playing guitars and singing in three other bands. Daniel persuaded his brother Omar to leave some of his other band commitments to join THD and Omar happily agreed. The first two shows were a success and THD was an instant hit but another problem ensued soon after. Due to conflict of interest, his selfishness, and lack of professionalism, the bassist was asked to leave the band since he couldn't reach common ground with the rest of the group. The band was soon stuck without a bassist for about 2 months until Omar introduced Julian to the group and the band was instantly impressed with his contribution and the rest as they say is history. Omar and Julian 's unprecedented skill and experience helped expand the band's capability to successfully execute even the most difficult songs recorded by the musicians from Morrissey 's solo act and The Smiths. Since the band's conception to the present These Handsome Devils have captivated audiences, they continue to grow in popularity in the Morrissey/ The Smiths scene and have become an underground sensation. With so many other great Morrissey/The Smiths tribute bands circulating nowadays These Handsome Devils certainly stand out and have left their mark with their diverse backgrounds, youth, energy and love for the music they pay homage to. They are definitely LA's best kept secret and anyone who has been fortunate enough to see them perform would agree. | |
