The Annual MARIJUANA LIBERATION DAY ( March to End the Drug War) is set to hit New York City and 240 other cities worldwide this coming weekend, Saturday May 3rd 2008 Organized by Cures Not Wars, the European Coalition for Just and Effective Drug Policy, the Worldwide Marijuana March and the Drug Policy Alliance, marchers will start gathering at 11:00AM at Tompkins Square Park (St. Marks & Avenue A, on Manhattan's Lower East Side) for a health fair, speak-out and concert. They will march out at 1:45PM sharp, proceeding north via 1st Ave to Dag Hammarskjold Plaza at the United Nations, where a full lineup of speakers, artists and bands will hold forth. The purpose of this march is to, by a show of support by marchers, demonstrate to all law-makers and the UN the growing need to implement new legislation in dealing with Marijuana-related cases, as well the decriminalization of personal-use amounts of all banned substances. In 2008 we are focusing on the UN as part of a year-long campaign of demonstrations and lobbying which has already produced major concessions of fact by the UN Drug Czar Antonio Costa, repudiating the 1998 UN call to "make the world drug-free in a decade" : “Looking back over the last century, we can see that the control system and its application have had several unintended consequences--" “The first unintended consequence is a huge criminal black market that thrives in order to get prohibited substances from producers to consumers, whether driven by a 'supply push’ or a 'demand pull', the financial incentives to enter this market are enormous. There is no shortage of criminals competing to claw out a share of a market in which hundred fold increases in price from production to retail are not uncommon”. “The second unintended consequence is what one might call policy displacement. Public health, which is clearly the first principle of drug control…was displaced into the background”. “The third unintended consequence is geographical displacement. lt is often called the balloon effect because squeezing (by tighter controls) one place produces a swelling (namely an increase)in another place…” “A system appears to have been created in which those who fall into the web of addiction find themselves excluded and marginalized from the social mainstream, tainted with a moral stigma, and often unable to find treatment even when they may be motivated to want it.” *Making drug control 'fit for purpose': Building on the UNGASS decade" Protesters will march to end the drug war, decriminalize users, end the Rockefeller drug laws; and protect the rights of individuals with chronic diseases including HIV/AIDS to access medical marijuana, as well as access to sterile syringes, naloxone and ibogaine for the addicted.
