Introduction: Broken Promises

The State of the World's Human Rights

Amnesty International is a worldwide movement of people who campaign for internationally recognized human rights for all. Amnesty International Tampa Bay - AIUSA Chapter 240 is committed to that end. For more information about Amnesty International, visit amnesty.org or Amnesty International USA at amnestyusa.org . For regional, Gulf coast information about Amnesty International Tampa Bay, visit amnestytampa.org . If you're interested in joining the AITB Listerv through Yahoo Groups, click here . Would like it if you'd visit. Don't mind if you stay. It is your community, your world. Nothing changes without your "voice" or action.

The Tampa Amnesty International Group meets on the second Wednesday of every month at 7:00 p.m. in the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Suite on the second floor of Hillsborough County's John F. Germany Public Library at 900 N Ashley Drive (riverside), Downtown Tampa.

For maps and directions, click here or visit www.hcplc.org. For membership and additional information, contact 214.284.9965 or 813.760.2220.

"Human progress is neither automatic nor inevitable... Every step toward the goal of justice requires sacrifice, suffering and struggle; the tireless exertions and passionate concern of dedicated individuals." - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Dear Amnesty International Supporter,

When you sign the pledge on our new Tear It Down site, you bring us one name closer to our goal of 500,000. This simple act sends a powerful message to Congress - that it's time to change our country's course on human rights and tear down the detention facility at Guantnamo Bay once and for all. Won't you take action now? Click here or on the image below.

But this fight is far from over. That's why I'd like to invite you to join Amnesty today . Stand with us as we investigate and expose the abuses of Guantnamo Bay and elsewhere. Join more than 2.2 million other supporters, activists, and volunteers in over 150 countries, and help us create a safer, more just world.

By becoming a member , you enable us to recruit committed activists, free prisoners of conscience, lobby Congress, and engage in public outreach to put an end to horrors and injustices like those taking place in Guantnamo.

Together we can create a world where every man, woman, and child can enjoy the rights of life and liberty; a world where torture and slavery are abolished; a world filled with respect for the dignity of all people. Please support Amnesty International today and make a world of difference.

Thank you for all you do in support of human rights.

Sincerely,

Larry Cox
Executive Director
Amnesty International USA

P.S. In order to maintain our impartiality, Amnesty International does not accept any government funding. That's why it is so important for individuals like you to support our life-saving work.

If he's denied justice and executed, you or your loved ones could be next.

More than two years into the human rights disaster of Hurricane Katrina, thousands remain displaced because of an absence of affordable housing, with rent increases up more than 40% and the majority of public housing still shuttered. Local and federal agencies reportedly plan to demolish four of the largest public housing developments in New Orleans, which would eliminate the majority of public housing in the city. This could affect thousands of former residents, many of whom are keen to return. Help uphold New Orleans residents' right to return by ensuring that the Senate passes a bill that addresses housing needs in New Orleans and the Gulf Coast. Urge your senator to co-sponsor the Gulf Coast Housing Recovery Act of 2007 (S. 1668), or thank your Senator, if he or she is already a co-sponsor. The House has already passed its version of this bill, H.R. 1227.
