| The Velvet Lounge is the only place in the world where you can hear the Chicago sound six nights a week. The Sunday night jam sessions have been an effective way to promote younger members of the jazz community. In 1982 Fred Anderson opened The Velvet Lounge, after his club The Birdhouse, on the near north side, closed due to city zoning ordinances. For 25 years The Velvet Lounge was at 2128 1/2 S. Indiana St., and in 2007 it relocated to its current location.Fred Anderson is an amazing jazz artist who has worked with many outstanding musicians throughout his career. Fred's role as community leader, especially in terms of how much The Velvet Lounge has contributed to the music scene, is remarkable.The musicians who have performed at The Velvet Lounge include: Douglas Ewart, Nicole Mitchell, Tatsu Aoki, Hamid Drake, Joseph Jarman, Roscoe Mitchell, Renee Baker, Mwata Bowden, David Boykin, Roscoe Mitchell, Warren Smith, Maggie Brown, Bob Moses, Saalik Ziyad, Tomeka Reid, Ken Vandermark, Dee Alexander, Jeff Parker, Karl E.H.
