About Me

"Music is my life, my body, my spirit, my soul and my heart, and it gives me unconditional satisfaction, solace and passion to learn more and create more immortal sounds. It cries the tears that never flowed. It empties the emptiness within and fills it up again with abundance. I chose to embark on this lifelong journey of resonance, learning to listen, learning to give and grow deeper every moment. I wish to touch many hearts, sharing the gifts and blessings God has bestowed."
Hannah Sun, born in 1989, began studying the piano at the age of two in her native China. Her first teacher was her mother, concert pianist Qi Melody He. At age three, Hannah played in the televised "Guangzhou Children's Piano Recital." The following year, Hannah won First Prize in the Hong Kong, Macau and Guangzhou Piano Competitions.
In 1995, Hannah moved to Australia, and began studying with Nehama Patkin and performed several concertos with orchestras, including the 2nd Concerto of Saint-Saëns, the 3rd Concerto of Kabalevsky, the 1st Concerto of Mendelssohn and Mozart’s A major Concerto K.488. She won a scholarship to study in the Australian National Academy of Music in 2001 and 2002.
Hannah was named First Prize Winner in the Second New York Piano Competition in June 2004. The bi-annual event, presented under the auspices of The Stecher and Horowitz Foundation, brought 22 teenage contestants (14-18 years old) from all over the United States to New York. As the First Prize Winner, she had the opportunity to concertize in venues up and down the East Coast. Hannah's first concert following the NYPC was performing the Schumann Piano Concerto four weeks later with The Manhattan Chamber Orchestra at New York's Trinity Church , appearing under the baton of Richard Auldon Clark. Hannah's participation in this competition has been viewed nationally in the documentary BEYOND THE PRACTICE ROOM, a behind-the-scenes look at the competition, shown on PBS.
In November 2005, Hannah performed Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue with the Orchestra of Southern Utah. She was awarded a full scholarship at the International Keyboard Institute and Festival at Mannes College of Music in 2005 and 2006. She also received grants from the Children's Foundation for the Arts in 2004 and 2005. She received third place in the 2006 Kosciuszko Foundation's Chopin Piano Competition. Later that year, she won the Long Island School Media Association (LISMA) International Music Competition. Recently, she was awarded a Silver Award from the National Foundation of the Advancement of the Arts and attended the youngARTS week in Miami, Florida. In 2007, Hannah was awarded a scholarship to attend the Fontainebleau Summer Music Festival where she received the Prix Nadia Boulanger.
Hannah attended LaGuardia High School as an instrumental student where she was a winner of the school's annual Concerto Competition in 2005. A student of the late Constance Keene, with whom she had studied since 2003, Hannah continued at the Manhattan School of Music with Miyoko Lotto where she was awarded a full scholarship. She currently attends The Juilliard School studying with Jerome Lowenthal.

Brahms Concert

It was exhilarating. I am still hung-over from the excitement. The energy was so intense; it was as if the soul of Brahms had unfurled from the center that held all five of us. I am truly grateful for...
