This is the musical diary of Anne Sulikowski. She began this project in the Winter 2000 when she got her first personal computer. Since then she has musically documented and explored extraordinary events, her dreams, random thoughts and the simple pleasures and boredom of her everyday life. Building Castles out of matchsticks cannot be lumped into a particular genre as no two songs, albums or pieces are alike in style, sound or emotional drive. Her tracks range widely from a chorus-refrain synth pop to crackled blips and skips of ambience and minimalism. Her experimentations are filled with analogue synthesis, organs, broken guitar strumming, pedal manipulations, found sounds, disjointed beats and barely there vocals telling secrets she wouldn't dare write. or would she? the honesty contained in the music of building castles out of matchsticks is real. as real as the one thousand sides of anne that records them. Influences: my shifting reality. secrets. surprises. stories my memories my daydreams the stars. space. romance. Kim Gordon the colour grey. flowers. real life events. and science fiction books.... QUESTIONS... PAUSES. so what if everything i know and remember isn't even real. i think alot about that. memories? AN illusion of time missing. humble pieces thrown together. it doesn't make any sense anymore. things are shadows without substance.... and still my heart beats to the sounds of thousands of robots ALL singing to themselves. real or not that is my biggest influence of all! and things like ubik. radio shows. an eye to the sky? synthesized sounds. and every single album by Rothko i really like butterflies. country roads. report cards. sweet kisses. casino versus japan. moogs robots hawkwind with brock+turner! robert calvert first dates. getting over horrible breakups. the other window. mark beazley. three sweet kitties. phil ogison. long talks. ESCAPING heart ache... MONOLOGUE: if i could you know i would i do not want to waste another day. i would have never let you down AN ASIDE... you know i have 2 problems IN LIFE. 1. people have let me down 2. i have this inability to let things go. ? and still people seem to take and take some more.... but this is all i have. it may not be much but to me it's everything. ISN'T IT funny HOW i spend most of my time thinking daydreaming and wandering..... documenting. wishing... re-living. practicing the art of forgetting erasing. but i still know how to smile. and i really love music and flying saucer attack. and cute robots thunder storms fishies in a pond reflections in water happiness. books by philip k dick. silence. pink ballons. snowflakes. BUT i guess it doesn't mean anything. cause none of this is real! i know i know... IM STUCK IN SOME KIND OF LA LA LAND. BUT YOU KNOW, I LIKE IT HERE! i love sonic youth. dream signals. oval. i like playing with short wave radios. and matt david. looking at autumn trees. seefeel. i love post cards. original ideas. creativity. im always puttering about a small land. my most secret land lust? belonging. love.? hatred. false hopes. ideals? these are what goven my life. so lets forget everything and listen to yo la tengo. my life is filled with unreplied emails. blocked users. secret messages. empty streets. kisses goodbye. painful hellos. cold days. the longest nights.
