| KENZIE CLARKE MacKenzie Clarke AKA Kenzie and formerly known as The Sorceress has been immersed in a musical environment since she was very little. From her parents influence of Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, and Earth Wind and Fire records, along with the radio pumping out the hits of the 80's, there was always some form of music in the Clarke house. With the musical instinct ingrained through her upbringing, Kenzie was able to conceive the basics of music theory, and played numerous instruments throughout her teenage years. These lessons early in Kenzie's life started the journey in which she now travels.1997: Kenzie came upon what she had been looking for - rave culture. She quickly felt the connection with the people, environment, and the music. In awe of the impact electronic music had on her, and the emotions it created she found herself being drawn to the mysterious way's of the musical shaman; the DJ. 1999: Turntables, mixer, and vinyl, have become her instruments of choice. From DJing in her bedroom to small house parties, Kenzie quickly became a local favorite. Her hard house sounds helped her gain notoriety as she filled in the much needed niche on and around Vancouver Island. A decision to play as one of the only DJ’s on the Teamhardcore.com roster helped her as well, allowing her to travel and play at large Vancouver parties on a regular basis. From sharing the main stage at the Plaza of Nations with big names such as Baby Anne, Queen Maxine, Deep Dish, and Mark E.G., to guest DJ’ing on the now defunct ‘The G-Spot’ on 96.1 fm, Kenzie was working hard to push her sound.2000-2002: Living with 5 other DJ’s constantly motivated Kenzie to keep her skills in check. After forming the Nomad Collective with those roommates, they worked together to start throwing parties, and weekly club nights. Her first residency in Nanaimo was at the first Nomad night – Sushi @ The Jungle, and at the same time the group began hosting a show on local college radio. After a few venue changes, Sushi was done, and the radio show had turned into an internet radio show, broadcast weekly from the ‘Igloo’, the nomads place of residence. After being offered a job in Victoria, Kenzie felt it was time for a move south to Victoria, which proved to be another huge step in her musical evolution. She slowly but surely started to make a name for herself in the competitive DJ’ing scene in Victoria, gaining fans through her intuitive mixing and crowd interaction. Soon after moving, she was offered a part time job at Stylus Records, bringing her into an amazing group of musicians and people, and allowing her to interact with other people in the music community on a face to face basis.2003: Making a sneaky name change from ‘The Sorceress’ to ‘Kenzie Clarke’ further cements the musical evolution that Kenzie has embarked on. Starting to incorporate more diverse styles of music into each set helps to set her apart from many of her peers, and she begins to explore the realms of deeper and tech house, break beats, and drum and bass. This same year, Kenzie met Mama Miche on a ferry ride to play a gig together in Vancouver. This is one night they would never forget – Bitchin’ was born.2004 to Present: The past two years have been the best musically for Kenzie, seeing her and Mama Miche push their Bitchin’ club nights and DJ’ing sets to a whole new level. After rocking crowds at Soundwave, at this past summers Glade Festival in Reading, and also in the Fractal Forest at the past two Shambhala Music Festivals, these girls are looking forward to what lies in store for them next. Kenzie has taken her first steps into the world of production, partnering with Hrdvsion for the creation of their project ‘Voyeur/Voyeur’, as well as partnering with Tide Pool Recordings founder Thor Kell , aka Fractal, in their group ‘Babyltr0n’. Although Voyeur/Voyeur now plans on just continuing as a DJ’ing duo, Kenzie and Thor are once again behind the computer, on the keyboards and on the mic, coming up with something fresh for the masses. After impressing the live radio broadcasters at the Glade festival, .the ladies are set to become part of the nsbradio.co.uk team, broadcasting ‘Mother’s Cupboard Radio’ every Sunday night from 4:00pm to 6:00pm Calgary time. Run by Miche, and guest DJ’ed by Kenzie, this show promises sweet sets from the Bitchin’ duo, and the solo members. | |
