About Me |
|
| We offer a grassroots women's boxing program that will continue to develop outstanding boxers based on the development of skills, brains and guts. As we grow as a team and training program we will do our part in developing female boxing and kickboxing champions the old-fashioned way …by working for it.In 1995 Lee noticed there was a shift in the club’s clientele. A club that started out as predominately male was starting to attract female members. Not only were the females training, but they were every bit as dedicated as the men.Eventually some of the women came to Lee and stated that they also wanted to compete. There was no hesitation. Lee whipped three of them into fighting shape and threw them head-first into a few kickboxing competitions and, later, boxing tournaments. Not only did they fare very well, they won.In 1998 he established the Teamfreeform Women’s Boxing/Kickboxing Team (the women usually did both arts) in which these women dominated their weight divisions in boxing and kickboxing throughout the NYMetro area.In 2001 Lee’s Teamfreeform prepared three ladies for the First Women’s World Boxing Championships. This was a pre-Olympic-style tournament that included 35 countries, thus setting the wheels in motion toward making women’s boxing an Olympic sport. A quarter of the American Team was made up of women from Teamfreeform, a feat which made history in women’s amateur boxing in the U.S. and is not likely to be repeated any time soon.In 2002 the team sent another woman to the 2nd World Games who was chosen as the U.S. Team Captain. Our goal at Teamfreeform is to develop excellent boxers (male and female) and in the process assist in keeping women’s boxing and kickboxing growing and on the path toward World-Wide acceptance. What started out as a small women’s team has developed not only into a sorority, but has also become a legacy. For more info go to:www.teamfreeform.com ..Boxing for FitnessLet’s face it: not everyone wants to be a competitor, but no one minds being in a competitor’s shape. This is what our Authentic Boxing For Fitness Program offers.Through a gradual and intense process, you will go through the same paces our competitors go through. It’s designed to give you that competitor look and a contender’s attitude. This is our oldest and most popular training program.Check it out: you come in for a 15-20 minute improvisational warm-up followed by a 5-10 minute stretch. Then you’re in the ring, sharpening your skills, with 2-4 rounds of shadow boxing. After that, it’s a 20-minute interval conditioning routine that causes average competitors to laugh at their previous training program.Next it’s down to the floor for a series of circuit training rotations throughout the gym. You will move from station to station, drilled under the sharp eye of Lee Shabaka or one of his highly-trained champions or instructors. By the time you’re done you'll feel like a competitor paying his or her dues.During this course you'll learn all there is to learn about boxing basics. Keep in mind this is not an aerobic boxing class, it’s not a Simple Simon “do as I do” class—it’s a “learn what you’re doing” academic program, geared to get your butt in competitor’s shape. This is a time-proven program that has gotten our members in great shape in 3-6 months and that’s only the beginning. This program is a win/win situation. | |

Heroes:GOD ... And all those athletes that came before us. Lee Shabaka has studied various forms of martial arts since the age of fourteen including karate, kung-fu, boxing and kickboxing. During his early years of training he attended college at St. Augustine’s in Raleigh, North Carolina. There he met and trained with several amateur and professional tournament champions. It was then that he came to the conclusion that there are no superior systems, only superior fighters—a motto he uses up until this day. After college, Lee returned to his native New York landing work as a professional fitness trainer. Through that knowledge he began to emphasize the importance of conditioning in training via calisthenics, resistance and cardiovascular activity, in creating a complete fighter. Lee integrated all these elements into his martial arts training. In 1987 Lee developed and began to teach his own martial arts concepts, Freeform Kickboxing, which draws upon his broad background in different forms and styles, utilizing the most effective techniques from each. Although Lee’s Freeform Method was not a classical Asian system, it contains a very traditional and universal training base. It’s nucleus is that of boxing and kickboxing and is highly effective in its form. From 1987 to 1993, Lee introduced his training concepts to the top health clubs in New York City, such as New York Health and Racquet and New York Sports Club, long before boxing and kickboxing became trendy. Lee states that when he first brought punching mitts and kicking shields into the health clubs in the 80s and early 90s most managers didn’t know what they were, let alone what they were for. Nevertheless a simple exhibition in the use of this equipment was good enough for most health clubs to give the green light. He focused on using boxing and kickboxing techniques as a vehicle towards a fitness workout and the classes became a hit. From 1995 to the present Lee has also taught his training methods at New York’s best known boxing gyms such as Kingsway Boxing Gym and Gleason’s Gym. Lee admits that not everyone is cut out for this system simply because some people don’t adjust well to intense training. But those that do have nothing to lose and everything to gain: for them its a win-win situation. In 1998 he developed a women’s component and by 2001 Teamfreeform prepared 3 women for the First Women’s World Boxing Championships (See Our Women’s Boxing Club) thus supplying the U.S. with 1/4 of the American Team. Team Freeform has continuously developed male and female competitors on the State, National and International level. We offer some of the best boxing instruction to competitors and general participants alike. Over the years we have gotten many people into fighting shape…at the Freeform Boxing Club, we specialize in results. |
