Den Alltag verdrängt. Und in etwas völlig Neues eintaucht. „Der Hörer soll durch das Tor, das wir mit unserer Musik öffnen, in eine andere Welt gelangen“, sagt Schandmaul-Violinistin Anna Katharina Kränzlein. „Dort kann er sich fallen lassen, abschalten, eine Auszeit nehmen und auftanken.“ Mit Erfolg: Immer mehr Menschen nehmen die Einladung in die „Anderswelt“ an. „Mit Leib und Seele“, das fünfte Schandmaul-Album (2006), erreichte Platz zehn der deutschen Album-Charts, das Live-Album „Kunststück“ (2005) Platz zwölf – und „Wie Pech und Schwefel“ (2004) schaffte es auf Platz dreizehn. Und jetzt? Jetzt liegt das sechste Album der sechs Münchner vor: „Anderswelt“. Und es ist anders als alles, was man sonst so hört. „Im Prinzip machen wir Weltmusik“, sagt Schlagzeuger Stefan Brunner, wohl wissend, dass die Basis ihres Sounds Folkrock bildet. „Wir kommen aus verschiedenen musikalischen Lagern. Birgit, unsere Flötistin, hört hauptsächlich Folk und Weltmusik, Anna hat klassische Musik studiert, Matthias, der Bassmann, steht auf die Red Hot Chili Peppers, und Thomas, unser Sänger, hört am liebsten deutsche Singer/Songwriter. Ich hingegen ziehe mir harte Sachen wie Korn rein.“ Und dennoch bringen sie all diese Einflüsse unter einen Hut. Da ertönen funky Bassläufe zu mächtigen Metal-Riffs, lässige, fast jazzige Beats zu Dudelsäcken, akustische Gitarren zum krachenden Schlagzeug. In einem Punkt war man sich einig: Weniger ist mehr! „Songs zu überladen und künstlich aufzublasen ist angesichts der modernen Studiotechnik einfach“, verrät Brunner. „Das kann jeder, und genau das wollten wir vermeiden.“ Das gilt auch für die Texte: Schandmaul erzählen Geschichten, die jeder nachvollziehen kann – in fernen Zeiten angesiedelte Lovestorys, die in die Jetzt-Zeit übertragbar sind. Sie singen über Weiberhelden („Das Missgeschick“), Zwangsehen („Braut“) und wilde Fantasien („Königin“). „Die Texte sind ein wichtiger Teil unseres Erfolges“, meint Anna, „weil sie jeden ansprechen.“ Dementsprechend bunt ist auch das Publikum der Münchner: Junge und Ältere, Ausgeflippte und Normalos. Was auch daran liegt, dass Schandmaul keinerlei Starallüren zeigen: Sie beantworten alle E-Mails von Fans und geben nach jedem Gig Autogramme. „Ich finde es unangenehm, wie ein Star behandelt zu werden“, sagt Anna, „wir sind doch ganz normale Leute.“ Leute, die nicht alltägliche Musik machen. Originelle Musik, die in keine Schublade passt. Eine „Anderswelt“ eben, die auch noch in vielen Jahren existieren wird. AndersweltRelease date: 04. April 2008Question: what does ”Anderswelt” mean in English? Answer: “Parallel Universe”. An oasis where you can forget all your worries, where the everyday just disappears and you can immerse yourself in something completely new. “Our music opens another door, and the listener can walk though it into another world”, says Schandmaul violinist Anna Katharina Kränzlein. They can let themselves fall into it, switch off, take time out and restore their energies”. And with no little success: more and more people are taking up the invitation to enter a “Parallel Universe”. “Mit Leib und Seele” (“Body and Soul”), the fifth Schandmaul album, released in 2006, reached number ten in the German album charts, the live album “Kunststück” (“Sleight of Hand”, 2005) reached number twelve, and “Wie Pech und Schwefel” (“Roller Coaster”, 2004) number thirteen. So what now? The sixth album by the six musicians from Munich is about to be released: “Anderswelt”. And it it’s different from anything else you’ve heard. “Basically, we’re playing world music”, says drummer Stefan Brunner, knowing full well that their sound is based on folk rock. “ We come from six different music camps. Birgit, our flautist, listens mainly to folk and world music, Anna studied classical music, Matthias our bassist prefers the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Thomas our singer likes German singer-songwriters best. As for me, I prefer heavy stuff like Korn”. And yet they still manage to bring all these different influences together under one roof. From funky bass to powerful metal riffs, languid, almost jazzy beats to bagpipes, and acoustic guitars to crashing drum solo’s. They all agreed on one thing: less is more! “Modern studio techniques make it easy to overdo songs and pump them up too much”, admits Brunner. “ Anybody can do that and it’s exactly what we wanted to avoid”. And the same goes for the lyrics: Schandmaul tell stories that everyone can understand – love stories set in a time long ago that translate to the present day. They sing of Lotharios (“Das Missgeschick“), forced marriages (“Braut“) and wild fantasies (“Königin“). “The lyrics are an important part of our success“, says Anna, “because they speak to everyone.” Their Munich fans are similarly colourful: from young to old, whacky to normal. One thing you notice is that the Schandmaul band members don’t go around behaving like stars: they answer all the fans’ emails, and give autographs after every gig. “I find it really unpleasant to be treated like a star”, says Anna, “after all, we are just ordinary people”. People who don’t just create ordinary music. Original music that won’t be pigeon-holed. A “Parallel Universe”, even, and one that will be with us for years to come. |
