Shelley Raymond combines elements of soul and folk music into something she refers to as "soulk". Her sultry vocals evoke the soul of the blues, the familiarity of folk music, the intrigue of jazz, and the conviction of rock into an infectious style that is truly her own. From her piano lessons in elementary school to majoring in music in college, Shelley has always been involved in music. Originally from Charleston, SC, she received a music degree from Winthrop University, where she performed everything from opera classics to jazz standards. Now Shelley is making a name for herself in Nashville, TN. She has been writing songs since 2004 and has performed at several writers showcases at the legendary Bluebird Café. She has shared stages with Emmylou Harris, Gretchen Peters, Denitia Odigie, Jason Eskridge, Steff Mahan, Bekka Bramlett and Daniel Lee. "From a guy's perspective, listening to Shelley Raymond arouses a feeling suspiciously like sensual curiostiy with a pleasantly bitter streak of shame. You're not the guy she's singing about/to but you'll wish you were. At least for the good times. Her free and fearless vocals range from a cooing whisper to a soulful, plaintive howl. Her lyrics tear you apart line by line, only to build you back again with verse after verse of surgically precise digs and strokes. Her guitar playing is clean and sublimely free of artifice. Raymond casually combines elements of soul and folk into something she playfully refers to as "soulk music" (which, afterall, sounds better than "foul music").
