About Me

Finally, after 20 years of trying and failing to become a filmmaker, screenwriter, director etc. it is happening!Since May 2006 I have been hired to write 8 screenplays. The one written in May began shooting in NYC on 1/5/07.I am currently writing two screenplays for producers in L.A. and NYC.More importantly, I am expecting to go into production on my own feature in May, after several years of false starts and last minute shut-downs.I went to summer camp with Ben Stiller in 1976.My short film "The True Meaning Of Cool" won and award from the American Film Institute.I love film, working on my own stuff but, just as important, helping others with their work. I just want to see good movies getting made and I try to help whoever, whenever, whether it is an artsy intellectual film or a deliriously sleazy horror film...I love them all and want to help you make yours as good as it can be.I am partial to indie film. I once worked happily for free for 4 months on the crew of a low-budget indie film, finished it on a Saturday and went to work on a big budget Hollywood film on Monday, made buckets of money but was bored to tears and disgusted by the wretched excess and irresponsible waste of resources....an amazing study in contrasts! What can I say? I love movies, have worked on films, reviewed films, and I am always trying to get one or more of my own screenplays produced -- either by myself or by someone else --- or help other people with their films.I am back in my native Philly after a couple of years in Rockland, Maine. I teach or have taught screenwriting and film history at Drexel University, Temple University, Arcadia University and The University Of The Arts.

My Interests

Film, mostly, other stuff if I am pressed. Voyeurism?

I'd like to meet:

I'm always happy to connect with people I already know but I'd also like to meet other filmmaker types: writers, directors, actors, actresses, etc.I am always networking, have had much sucess in helping other people get their films made. I am constantly reading other people's screenplays and offering suggestions or developing original projects for them.If you are filmmaker with a finished film and need distribution, ask me to to take a look at it because I network with some distributors and will try to hook you up if I think your film is something they can work with.

Music:

I'm still open to all types of music, I just never really listen to it anymore. U2, Sting, 70's funk and power pop, 80's nostalgia, Beck, Chris Isaak, Los Lobos, Talking Heads, sugary pop confections with a beat, almost anything with a piano, probably lots of stuff that I'm forgetting.

Movies:

Jaws, Touch Of Evil, After Hours, classic B movies, contemporary B movies, teen movies, North By Northwest, Coen Brothers, Steven Soderbergh, independent film, School Of Rock, David O Russell, Mystery Train, Down By Law, The Conversation, The Sound Of Music, slasher movies, Tremors, some Woody Allen (Purple Rose Of Cairo, Hannah and Her Sisters, Crimes And Misdemeanors), old Martin Scorsese: Taxi Driver, Orson Welles, Zoolander, Dead Funny, Confessions Of A Dangerous Mind, Wages Of Fear, Ikuru, To Kill A Mockingbird, Office Space, Ginger Snaps, Prom Night, Before Sunrise, Before Sunset, That Thing You Do, The Rookie, Bowling For Columbine, The Believer, The Hidden, Jackie Brown, Adaptation, Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid, When Harry Met Sally, Pee Wee's Big Adventure, boy tear jerkers - "Brian's Song", "Bang The Drum Slowly", The True Meaning Of Cool, no budget schlock, well-made no budget films with good stories, interesting actors and inspired directors and I must admit, that whenever I am in a bad, sad, demoralized or grouchy mood, I put on "Wedding Crashers" and everything magically melts away.

Television:

Philadelphia Eagles games. Philadelphia Phillies games.

Books:

Alternative Screenwriting, The Sinus Solution, Corduroy, To Kill A Mockingbird

Heroes:

My kids, my wife.

Don't hate me but I am feeling more and more that it is now at least as important to make films that are marketable as it is to make good films. We should all strive for quality but recognize that we ...
