About Me |
|
| Tenor saxophonist John Ellis leads one of the most exciting young quartets in modern jazz. While Ellis first made a name for himself as a key member of the Charlie Hunter Trio, he has quickly established the reputation of a compelling leader in his own right. On his most recent album, One Foot In The Swamp (HYENA Records), he garnered critical praise far and wide. The New York Times stated: "John Ellis stays true to the idea of the Southern expression in jazz, from New Orleans funk to folkloric melodies...he has the knack for writing catchy, fluid, optimistic songs; but he is also fascinated by the ways musicians can break down structure and create it on the fly." All About Jazz New York declared: "It's that mix of North and South, Big Easy and Big Apple, funk and futuristic sounds that makes Ellis one of the more exciting young artists to emerge in recent years." | |

Six Rivers Brewery |
|
| OK. This was the low point, hands down. What can be said? First, it's very hard to do any kind of business with people who are high, and there may not be a soul who isn't high in Humboldt County. ... Posted by John Ellis on Thu, 26 Oct 2006 04:09:00 PST |

| Now this was an awesome room to play in. It's amazing what a responsive audience can do for your morale. There was a dance collective that came by and went crazy in the back during the whole gig, an... Posted by John Ellis on Thu, 26 Oct 2006 04:01:00 PST |

Portland and the Good Foot |

| The first thing that must be reported about our time in Portland is that I had the best Gumbo I've ever had in my life there. I'm dead serious. Now I know there's those of you who will say it's not ... Posted by John Ellis on Tue, 17 Oct 2006 05:41:00 PST |

Port Townsend |

| Port Townsend is beautiful. We had a really fun gig at the Upstage. It's intimate enough to play acoustically, and even with a small audience it feels packed. The food was absolutely ridiculous, an... Posted by John Ellis on Sat, 14 Oct 2006 11:01:00 PST |
