About Me |

| "...America's Finest Chamber Orchestra. And if that sounds like some local chamber of commerce boosterism, I assure you it isn't. The only Southern California cultural institutions for which I have that kind of blind, uncritical affection are the Dodgers and Disneyland." -Jim Svejda Click here to download a free MP3 of LACO performing Mozart's Serenata Notturna as recorded live November 6th, 2005 at Royce Hall, conducted by Harry Bicket! The Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra was founded in 1968 as an artistic outlet for the film and record studios most gifted musicians. Since then, the 40-member orchestra has acquired a reputation as one of the top ten ensembles of its kind in the world. The respected music critic Jim Svejda recently praised LACO as "Americas finest chamber orchestra." Renowned pianist and conductor Jeffrey Kahane has led the group since 1997, continuing the standard of excellence set by the orchestras first four music directors, Sir Neville Marriner, Gerard Schwarz, Iona Brown and Christof Perick. The Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra (LACO) has announced programming for the 2007-08 season, the orchestra’s 39th subscription year, and its eleventh under Music Director Jeffrey Kahane. Running September 29, 2007 through May 31, 2008, the 2007-08 season is marked by a 10-day, four-country European tour, the first with Kahane, in spring 2008. The season also includes 14 orchestral series concerts: seven held at The Alex Theatre in Glendale, and seven held at Royce Hall on the UCLA campus. Other highlights include the West Coast premiere of Reza Vali’s Toward that Endless Plain, performed by Persian ney virtuoso Khosrow Soltani; the US premiere of Joseph Swensen’s orchestration of Brahms’s original 1854 version of piano trio op. 8 titled Sinfonia in B by Swensen; and a Sound Investment commission featuring the young American composer Kevin Puts — the first-ever solo piano concerto to be composed for Jeffrey Kahane to conduct from the keyboard. Guest artists include mezzo-soprano Jennifer Larmore, pianist André Watts, and violinist Chee-Yun in their orchestral series debuts, and the return of guest conductors Joseph Swensen and Harry Bicket. “There is an immense international and multi-cultural richness reflected in the season, which features music and musicians from Latvia, Finland, Romania, Russia, and Iran, among others. I am also proud that we will be embarking on a European tour to prestigious concert halls in Berlin, Paris, Vienna and other cities, which will allow us to share our virtuoso musicians with an international audience,” says Kahane. Executive Director Andrea Laguni comments, “Jeffrey and I are particularly looking forward to sharing with our audience outstanding international stars such as André Watts and Jennifer Larmore, as well as experiencing the talent of rising artists such as violinist Chee-Yun and composer Kevin Puts. The performance of two of the most important works of the symphonic repertoire, the Beethoven ‘Pastoral’ [May 2008] and Mendelssohn ‘Reformation’ symphonies [November 2007], together with the return of two tremendously inspiring conductors, Harry Bicket and Joseph Swensen, will provide our public with yet another memorable season.” The Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra believes that classical music is a joy to be shared by everyone. Through its Meet the Music program, LACO reaches thousands of elementary school students, most of whom have never experienced a classical concert before, and through Neighborhood Concerts, LACO brings live, professional performances to areas of greater Los Angeles where families have little or no access to the citys cultural institutions.
