| Every summer I commit myself to a community project of some sort in an effort to help make the world a better place.This summer I am producing and directing a documentary about the decline of the iconic blue crab in the Chesapeake Bay. Why should you care you may ask? Because we are all stewards of this earth and it takes all of us to make a difference. Everyday fertilizers and various chemicals are being dumped into the Bay. For the last ten years Virginia and Maryland have failed to meet EPA standards to improve water quality.
Scientific data collected during the annual 2008 winter dredging survey reveals the startling fact that Chesapeake Bay blue crab population has fallen 70% in just 15 years. In the early 1990s there were 400 million crabs of harvestable size in the bay. Today there is fewer than 120 million. This film explores this decline by interviewing scientist, government agencies, and governor Tim Kaine of Virginia. The state government has imposed stricter regulations on crabbing, which cuts deep into the professional fisherman pockets and their families.
This documentary seeks to find solutions as to what can be done about this important environmental issue.
