Heroes:Hunter S. Thompson (1937-2005)Hunter S. Thompson is truly a legend among men. Known for his outrageous writing style and desire to push all limits presented to him, he gained popularity strictly because of the fact that he was, as a human being, what so many others wanted to be.Thompson began writing as a sports journalist in 1956 while still enlisted in the Air Force at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida. He also freelanced for several other local newspapers on the side, despite regulations forbidding him from doing so. He attended Colombia University’s School of General Studies on the GI Bill while still maintaining his beat-inspired lifestyle (the writings that influenced the cultural transformations of the 60’s).In the early 1960’s he wrote two serious novels, Prince Jellyfish and The Rum Diary. While writing these books he was living in Puerto Rico and held various jobs including writing for a sports magazine, correspondent to the National Observer, and security guard.In 1963, he married his long-time girlfriend Sandra Dawn Conklin. They had one child, Juan Fitzgerald Thompson. In 1980 the couple divorced, but remained good friends until Thompson’s death.Thompson continued on to write for Rolling Stone magazine where his next two books, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail 1972. The books are about the search for the American Dream and Thompson’s coverage of the Nixon-McGovern election, respectively.Thompson even ran for sheriff of Pitkin County, Colorado on the “Freak Power” ticket. He narrowly lost the election to an incumbent Republican sheriff whom he referred to as “my long-haired opponent” (Thompson had shaved his head bald while his opponent had a crew cut). Among his platform’s goals were the decriminalization of the use of drugs (not trafficking of them), turning the streets into bike paths, and renaming Aspen, Colorado to “Fat City”. This endeavor proved to the world that Thompson had the wherewithal to successfully challenge his and others’ authority and try to help the world see things his way.His suicide in early 2005 was as much of a shock to the nation as it was to his family. His ashes were shot out of a cannon on top of a 153-foot tower designed after his famous symbol (shown on the left). He will forever be imitated, never copied, and, most of all, an icon of American journalism.RIP HST. |
