Like hisplatinum Chi-town counterparts Kanye West, Twistaand Common, 23 year-old rapper Romey is destinedto join his citys rap elite. Im that voice for the hustlers, explains the67 rhyme pusher who hails from Chi-Citys notorious Southside section.Theres a whole bunch of different styles inChicago that cater to all types of people. LikeKanye, he speaks to the average person, thugs,backpackers, the ladies and we love and embracehim for that. Common speaks for the consciouslisteners. Then theres a new generation ofrappers like Bump J, Sly Polaroid and myself thatspeak to the streets. Were all different, butits all Chicago. We all get that love. With his whole city behind him, the young MC isready to make the leap from a regional success toa nationwide contender. Hes aligned himself withsome of the countrys most influential mixtape andradio DJs, who have been spreading his words likethe gospel. There couldnt be a better time forthe self titled Michael Jordan of the rap gameto redirect rap back to a time when lyricsoutweighed hooks and rappers focused on the powerof their words rather than their material value. Born and raised in the gang-infested neighborhoodknown as the Wild Hundreds, Romey grew up turning the negativeimages around him into moving street narratives. As a kid it was nearlyimpossible for him to escape the evil trappings ofhis hood. Because of where Im from, Im gang affiliated, he explains. Everybody around me wasin a gang so I really didnt have a choice. Romeys life at home wasnt very different thanwhat he saw outside. His mother was a well knownhustler in and around their Roseland neighborhoodfor 20 yearsa trade she had no problem teachingher oldest son. I used to steal drugs from herand sell em, remembers Romey. At 11 I wasmaking like $200 or $300 dollars a day. But before he finished junior high, Romeys momwas sentenced to four years in prison. I wentfrom having everything right along with my motherto her going to prison. In 1994 Romey and his two younger sisters weresent to Memphis to live with their Aunt. After sixmonths, Romey moved again, this time he went tolive with his father in Milwaukee. There heattended high school and continued to do his shareof dirt while his mom sat in jail. It wasnt untila friend at school introduced him to Jay-ZsReasonable Doubt that Romey found a way out of histrife life. I seen how powerful Jay was with his flow andhow he effected the way that I looked at hustlingand all the stuff I was going through, heremembers before making the jump from the streetto the booth. Thats what ultimately made mewanna get into rap. For the first time, Romey started questioning hismorality on records, a skill that gives himadvantage today. On one of his latest mixtapegems, All Has Changed Romey raps, As I look inthe mirror Im shaking my head/ Cause Im knowingIm foul, how Im making my bread. He goes on toreflect on his not-so-happy upbringing by breakingdown the three lowest points of his life on IDont Have Nothin. Romey also proves he can talkabout more than his stormy past on the soulfulBobby Womack sampled P&Qs where he pops a bevyof clever analogies like: Im like Ron Artestwith a O Z/Cause all the other ballers know Imknown for the most D. Romey has aligned himself with Chicagos topmixtape suppliers, DJ Pharris DJ V Dub who havebeen continuously leaking his records directly tothe street. Outside of the Midwest, rap fiendshave recently gotten a huge dose of Romey thanksto his DJ Sickamore hosted CD/DVD, The ChicagoTakeover. Backed by the same mixtape DJ turned A&Rthat helped polish and present underground MCsSaigon and Tru-Life to the masses, Sickamoresstamp is a huge feat for rapper outside of NewYork City. When I met Sickamore, he sat andlistened to like 10 of my joints straight,recalls Romey. He was just like, Yo, yourecrazy, you sound incredible! I wanna work withyou. With some of the industrys top taste makerscosigning, Romey is ready to spread his word likethe gospel. And unlike most rap rookies that havetheir sites set of merely catching the nextshort-lived buzz single, Romey is focused on thequalities only the greatest MCs posses. His knackfor recreating his own hard knock life on recordmakes him a rarity in an era littered with hip-popacts whose catchy hooks are their biggest claim tofame.
