About Me |
|
| Memphis International Records is a new label born of an old idea: honest music played by real musicians. The company represents the combined vision of its principals, David Less and Bob Merlis. Less was a music journalist covering Memphis rich music scene for Rolling Stone and Downbeat while promoting concerts and festivals in the region. He then served as Executive Director of The Blues Foundation, and later became President of Gibson Records. He is currently an entertainment consultant with clients ranging from Gibson Guitar Corp., ABC News, CNN, Morgan Freeman Productions, The Smithsonian Institute and Varsity Spirit Corp. He heads Memphis International's home office on historic Union Avenue. Memphis International Records partner Bob Merlis is a well-known music industry figure having most recently served as Senior Vice President, Worldwide Corporate Communications for Warner Bros. Records. He has directed numerous publicity campaigns on behalf of such artists as Neil Young, ZZ Top, Chris Isaak, John Fogerty and others. A member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominating committee, he sits on the Blues Foundation board. His current client roster includes RCA Records, Rhino Records, ABKCO Industries, Dreamworks Records, The Bridge School and others. On establishing the company, Less says, "We thought if we dont do this, who will? In so many ways it just seemed like the right thing to do.""When David called me and asked if I wanted to partner with him in a new label venture emphasizing the best of American roots and blues, I had to say yes," Merlis noted. "The intent of Memphis International Records is to selectively record and release music by roots and blues artists to fill a void abandoned, for the most part by the major labels. We're not going to be slaves to a specific format," says Less. "Bob and I love blues but were looking forward to also getting involved in rock n roll, soul, and even jazz." Merlis, based in Los Angeles, taps into his PR background to provide strong marketing and editorial support for Memphis International Records releases while Less, a respected figure in Memphis music circles, concentrates on A&R and business affairs. |
