| L'italiano moderno è, come tutte le lingue nazionali, un dialetto che è riuscito a far carriera; ad imporsi, cioè, come lingua ufficiale di una regione molto più vasta di quell'originaria. In questo caso fu il dialetto fiorentino, parlato a Firenze, a prevalere, non tanto per ragioni politiche - come spesso capitava - ma per il prestigio culturale di cui era portatore. Il toscano, ed il fiorentino illustre (in quanto arricchito di prestiti dal siciliano, francese e latino) in particolare, era in effetti la lingua nella quale scrissero Dante Alighieri, Francesco Petrarca e Giovanni Boccaccio, considerati i tre massimi scrittori italiani.
