| I was the son of Zebedee and brother of St. James The Great. As we were mending our nets on the sea of Galilee, Jesus passed by and called us. Immediately we left our boat and our father and followed Jesus (Matthew 4:22). Jesus nicknamed us Boanerges-Sons of Thunder-on account of our strong temperament (Mark 3:17). I was the youngest of the apostles and I defined myself as the disciple whom Jesus loved (John 13:23). I was present at the Transfiguration, and during the Last Supper I leaned on Jesus' breast to ask for the name of the betrayer. I alone of the apostles stood at the foot of the cross, receivng the sublime mission to care for the Mother of the Lord.I settled at Ephesus, where I witnessed the assumption of the Virgin Mary. From there I was exiled to the Island of Patmos, where I wrote the Book of Revelation. A few years later, I returned to Ephesus, where I wrote three letters, which contain the sublime definition of the divinity: God is Love (1John 4:7). There I also wrote the 4th Gospel, whose sublime theology was represented in art as an eagle. When I was alraedy old, I used to speak to my flock only these words:" My little children, love one another." When they asked me why I kept repeating the same sentence, I replied: "Because it is the word of the Lord, and if you keep it you do enough." I died in peace at Ephesus in 101. | |
