About Me

Pronounced Key-ahm and correctly spelled Qiyam it means "Steadfast" in Arabic and is the first position in prayer. I am a native of New York State. Lived and loved between Upstate and NYC. I moved to Atlanta 7 years ago where I am a Design Consultant with a high end showroom. My hustle is designing and outfitting interior spaces for both Commercial and Residential clients. I divorced 5 years ago and remain single in a city of very questionable male orientation. Needless to say it's tough for a sista so I stay busy with work and projects. My passions are my family, interior design and fashion. Equally so, I can not live without music, a good read, and a cup (or three) of coffee or occassional cocktail. I enjoy bookstores, coffee shops, all sorts of design resources from museums to beaches to hotels to furniture boutiques and consignment in my down time. I believe that my first encounter with design was admiring the "crinkles" in the corners of my grandmothers eyes when she smiled......god's handiwork on natural canvas. I would love to travel abroad, very soon, to visit my twin sisters in Wales and Egypt, respectively; start my own interiors consulting business in the new year (2007); build a home in South Africa; and to some day find a really-good-but-not-perfect male life mate.

My Interests

My interests are Interior Design, Haute Couture, Street Fashion, and Music, Music, Music where my favorite spot is MOODS MUSIC in L5P - ATL.

I'd like to meet:

1. I'd like to meet Lenny Kravitz and Maxwell. Together they'd total two thirds of my ideal man. 2. COMMON or COMMON SENSE -- the UN-Common man! 3. Naomi Campbell - she is so phenomenal! 4. Ozwald Boateng - tailoring at its finest...he is so bad. 5. Basquiat - had he still been alive today.

Music:

I love all kinds of music and depending on my mood it can range from R&B (Old School and Recent) to House (Ohm Music, Ten City, Fingers Incorporated, etc. No Trance music, though -- yuck!) to Rap (I prefer NY -- Rakim, De La Soul, MOS DEF, Talib Kweli, Biggie/Diddy, etc.) and non-mainstream like THE ROOTS, Common, J*DaVey, PPP (Platinum Pied Pipers) and Sa Ra, KOS from Canada, the Broady Champs from ATL, etc., however, I am not really a fan of a lot of the dirty south stuff. Contemporary, Classic Jazz and Jazz fusion to Reggae, World Music and "Neo Soul" like Femi Kuti, Osunlade, Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, Amel Larrieux, Goapele, Julie Dexter, OMAR, Rebirth, Spacek, Amp Fiddler, Van Hunt, Brand New Heavies, Tortured Souls, etc. (can you tell I love this genre the best?).

Movies:

Anything related to the Harlem Renaissance period in NYC. My absolute favorites are independent films like those available at the Indy and Sundance film festivals. Some more favorites are: Love Jones, Warriors, Idylwilde, Basquiat, Lackawanna Blues, CRASH, Imitation of Life, Breakfast at Tiffany's, Beatstreet, The Usual Suspects, HEAT, A Bronx Tale, The Constant Gardener, Crooklyn, and City of God.

Television:

I watch a lot of Design TV and my fav programs are: Designer Guys, Dwell, idesign, Design Star, Project Runway, House of Boateng, and America's Next Top Model. What ever happened to Style with Elsa Klensch? Grey's Anatomy is at the top of that list along with CSI and Law and Order. Every now and again I'd catch an episode of the Dave Chappell show. I attached one of my favorite episodes which features Rick James who singlehandedly put my hometown on the map (rest in peace, Rick).

Books:

My latest read was Chasing Destiny by Eric Jerome Dickey who is a friend of mine. I recently picked up a book from my grandmother's bookcase entitled JAZZ CLEOPATRA: Josephine Baker In her Time by Phyllis Rose which has great vintage photography. I prefer fiction, non-fiction, and autobiography by African-American authors.

Heroes:

My grandmother, John F. Kennedy, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama.

Woke up this morning. Feet hit the floor. Put on the coffee. Open the blinds. Let the sunshine in. Pop in the Kewli. Let it marinate. Cup in hand. High in the air. Cheers to real hip hop.  ...

Changes

Today I finished reading this book and it is profound yet familiar to my own life.  Tragic yet hopeful.
