| INTERVIEW WITH 1973
by Tom. TOM : Why is your band called 1973? Tibo : It's the title of the first song we wrote, after two years of work. It's also the year that a lot of great albums came out, dark side of the moon for example Nicolas : 1973 (the song) sounds like the music we want to write. It is pop music, with meticulous harmonies and arrangements. Sounds good, no ? TOM : How did you guys meet ? Nicolas : I met Jérôme in highschool, at the back of the bus. You might think it's a joke, but its true! Jérôme : The first time I saw Tibo was in a small night club, ten years ago. He was playing with a funk band. The opening band was a Velvet Underground cover band. That band was Phoenix... TOM : How do you write your songs ? Jérôme : Most of the time, I sit in front of the TV, I turn off the sound, I take my guitar and I start playing whatever comes to mind. Sometimes, there are one or two chords which give me an idea for a voice. I used to be fascinated with chords with plenty of extensions. I was always looking for complicated chord progressions. Afterwards, I would always ask myself, « What are we going to sing on this ? » Now, I do the opposite. I look for a melody that works, and I develop the chords afterwards. Nicolas : I write the text according to what the melody inspires me... Tibo : Meanwhile, I think about things that are much more important than composing, like the equalization of the snare drum. When I know we have something, I can become a real studio rat... TOM : Where did you record the songs we can hear on your page? Nicolas : In 1973. Tibo : At my place. Not always with good equipment, but with a healthy consumption of pasta and a good attention to details. Jérôme : It's true that we work pretty hard on production details. We got it from Jon Brion, our spiritual master... TOM : How do the recordings go ? Tibo : From a first embryonic demo, Jérome and I record ideas of arrangements until our fingers ache. Then we let it all rest, we go fly a kite and we come back to it two months later to make it something else, something which sometimes sounds good. Jérôme : Tibo knows much more than me about programming. He loves to spend hours looking for different sounds. Meanwhile, I read women magazines and make suggestions. Nicolas : When they laid out the red carpet, I record my sweet voice... TOM : Jérôme, Tibo, you are two guitarists : who played the guitar parts we can hear ? Tibo : I did; I'm a much better guitarist than Jérôme Jérôme : It's true, but I know more chords ! TOM : Some songs are very short, why ? Nicolas : To leave time to fans to listen to Rufus Wainwright, Joni Mitchell, and Prince. TOM : What albums are you listening to these days ? Jérôme : Illinoise by Sufjan Stevens. Either than that, it can go from Rufus Wainwright and Pharrell Williams, to Bill Frisell, Kate Bush, the Beach Boys, Chocolate Genius and Joni Mitchell, with whom I am in love. I also listen to the new Prince album, without really listening to it. Nicolas : I like a lot of different things. A lot of things that dont sound at all like what we do, actually. The last Kayne West, the last John Legend. I also have good memories with Josh Rouse, Ed harcourt and Keane. Tibo : 461, Ocean boulevard by Mr Clapton, at least twice a month. TOM : What would you like to hear about your music? Tibo : That it's good. Nicolas : A lot of moments in my life I directly associate with a particular music. Like a lifetime soundtrack, so to say. If that happens to a few persons with our music, i'll be happy. TOM : What would you NOT like to hear about your music ? Jérôme : That it's a good start. TOM : What do you wish for 2007 ? Jérôme : To sign with a good label, play some shows and record a first album... Nicolas : To party like it's 1999 Tibo : To buy a Gretsch. |
