About Me |

CELTIC CONNECTIONS 2008I am a Photo Journalist and specialize in Music Photography. MY PHOTOS - http://www.flickr.com/photos/paulinekeightleyMY REVIEWS paulinesmusicreviews.blogspot.comPhotographs - are a truly ‘eye-opening’ and blessed experience. You have to be highly observant and able to see those magic moments. Whether the blue-greys of a new day, the long glow of dusk, shared laughter, intense depth in a singer, or majestic mountains. My aim is to capture those rare moments of quiet or intense reflection, an inner sense if special connections. This being in touch is highly rewarding, makes you appreciate beauty and soul wherever you might find it. * FEEDBACK ON MY PHOTOS

The most respected photographer of our time has an exhibition in Edinburgh Feb – April 2008 The 15th annual celebration of folk traditional music, the festival is a showcase Celtic singers and musicians. Scots - Karine Polwart, Kris Drever, Mike Scott, Julie Fowlis, James Mackintosh and Ewen Vernal. Irish - Heidi Tolboot, Sharon Shannon, Luka Bloom, Damien Dempsey, Karan Casey, Michael McGoldrick and Jim Murray. Plus the wonderful Kate Rusby. It was interesting to see so many artists perform..it made it clear how much of music or any art is about the ‘personality.’
Nick playing with Kirsty McGee and Mat Martin.INDIESCENELIVE! This shot was of singer songwriter David Sneddon, at the last night of his sold out gigs at the Edinburgh festival in august 2007– at the dark and atmospheric Jazz Bar in Chambers street. Chris Townsend was supporting....David’s voice is one moment melancholy and then tender, evocative and then forceful, led by his dynamic piano playing. It is about the heartfelt depth of emotional journeys, and the joy of love. It is original, poetic and melodic. It offers a subtle blend of sensitive melody and rhythmic moods. One of my favourite photos of David, it captured him in thoughtful mood. Taken at the Highbarn gig December 2006, which is an impressive oak beamed building and the tallest building in Essex.Patrick Watson band comes out of Montréal’s vibrant music scene. This photo was taken at their King Tuts gig Sept 2007. For their last number Patrick and guitarist took to the centre of the audience to conduct us in Man under the Sea. This band mixed things up – light fun rhythmic, echoing each other…,with playful percussion, varied soundscapes, and expressive vocals. Julian Perretta , is an up and coming young soul singer, with a passionate voice and a fun personality. Taken at the Regal Rooms London Oct 2007.QUOTES QUOTES: ""Hendrix is asked what inspires you? He replies, the people....."
Bono says he mistrusts an artist that is happy with the distance between them and an audience.....
""I put more into this record than I have ever put into an album. The lyrics took me months and months. I wanted to be eloquent, I wanted the lyrics to match up with the music, I wanted everything to be perfect . It is not there yet but, if you ever achieve perfection, you should burn your guitars."" Lightbody, Snow Patrol.
""
Quotes: Dylan; """
You never arrive.
Words change their meaning.
Time changes everything, you can not be wise and in love at the same time.
The first time Billie Holliday sing "Strange Fruit" it left the audience spellbound. Strange things go on.'
The perceptions in the press, they wanted to label me. I am not the conscience of the people .
I am playing to the people. Reaching the audience is what its about.""'
""Songs to me were more important than light entertainment. They were my preceptors and guide into some altered state of reality, some different republic. Some liberated republic,"" DYLAN Mat Martin is an accomplished musician who works with many respected artists - he has a passion for both music and art. I took these shots at Capercaille’s gig on February 2nd 2008 at the Old Fruitmarket where Mat was playing with Kristy McGee Hobopop Collective. He caught my attention with his obvious joy of playing. Some of my all time favourite Albums:Joni Mitchell - Blue / REM – Automatic for the People / U2 - Joshua Tree / Dylan – Blood on the Tracks / Dylan – Freewheelin / John Mayer – Room For Squares / Richard Thompson – Shoot Out The Lights / The Beatles - Rubber Soul / The Beatles – Sargent Peppers / Radiohead - Ok Computer/ Jeff Buckley - Grace / Dick Gaughan - Outlaws & Dreamers BEST VOICES: OTIS REDDING - the master of Soul. His voice tears and sears, speaks of emotional depths. (only voice close to Otis for emotion is David Sneddon’s)/ LENNON – for sincerity / DYLAN – many voices. Searching, questioning, angry voices. Richard Thompson – for honesty and drawing characters and stories. / Joni Mitchell - most emotional voice, soaring highs./ David Sneddon - A sensual pure yet hurtful voice. Jeff Buckley - for clarity, passion. JOHN MAYER - most melodic husky rhythmic voice. |

I'd like to meet:Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney, Richard Thompson, Naomi Wolf, Shakespeare, Van Gogh, Bono,DAVID SNEDDON EP WHITE NOISE www.indiestore.com/davidsneddon
A year after it’s release David's brilliant
‘WHITE NOISE’ EP
has topped the Indie charts the past month. White Noise EP Review’-David's songs portray wide-ranging moods with his pure sensual vocals in strong contrast to his hard hitting 'positive notes' piano. It brings a subtle blend of sensitive melody and rhythmic moods. Stand out tracks are the joyous Time, and energetic moving melody of One Old Soul. |

Movies:The Pianist, I Walk the Line, Gladiator, Lord of the Rings, Moulin Rouge, Garden State......and loads more. The Shawhshank Redemption - great script. ""If you can live through music, art or literature they are avenues of freedom. The music was like a beautiful bird and everyone felt free. " |

Books:Chronicles by Bob Dylan; One of the best reads, Dylan writes as a poet. About his journey through a library of undiscovered books, art that captures the essence of things, and theatre music that moves in a special way. From the magic of Blues singer Johnson, and Guthries songs of passion for the working man, Dylan moved through an incredible journey./ Falling Leaves by Adeline Yen Mah; A true story by a Chinese woman who now works in the US as a doctor. She was the unwanted daughter, and about the old way of life making way for the new./ The Road Less Travelled by Scott Peck; Very fascinating read about the emotional journeys we all make. Offers many insights. Written by a doctor who uses many true life experiences from his work with others. |

Heroes:Writers, artists, musicians.©paulinekeightley One of my favourite places is **Cezanne Studio Aix-eu-Provence, south of France. Cezanne’s paintings are very still and powerful. I was fascinated by his painting, the Two Card Players - the player on the left is the father who was against him painting........... THE STUDIO - ‘Calm harmony with Nature the logic of colour re-creating space’…. Enter his world, and follow his footsteps. On entering Cezannes studio there is a small sheltered garden and patio overhung with trees that splatter dappled and delicate sunlight, there is immediately a sense of calm and quiet, people speak in hushed tones, upstairs there is only the one room Cezannes studio, it holds the artefacts Cezanne liked to collect to express his art, a small marbled statue with an arm missing, fruit that is withering, in one corner hangs his dirty painters coat, a black suit jacket and his hat, everything is ordered and yet not ordered, there is a sense of harmony with nature, Cezannes art - his apple still lifes, his card players, capture this calm through the use of colours space and light , there are windows along the left and right walls and the rest is painted a stone grey, there are his easels palettes and picture frames, its not a shrine, its a testament, a place that speaks of art and what art is about, Cezanne worked very much alone, was rejected by Paris artists and was the first modern artist. QUOTE Cezanne: "For the strong feeling for nature which I assuredly have is the necessary basis for all conception of art upon which depends the greatness and beauty of all future work, the knowledge of the means of expressing our emotion is no less essential and is only to be acquired through very long experience."Footnote: A large group of Italian women entered the studio and spent the time chatting loudly and they lost it. Later a group of Japanese entered the studio and they were so hushed, respectfully soaking it all in. *God or No God?
Add Yourself to the Tradition We are all travellers on an amazing journey, there is so much to learn and so little time.
There are many distractions along our journey - the day to day realities, the media hype, the shops full of pretty goods, the entertainment channels. It is not an easy journey, but the easily won path is the less worthy one.
Be yourself, this is central, but I also hope you grow and take on board the best stories and advice.
It is not an easy journey.
Knowing yourself -
You arrive
But you never arrive.
I am only finding myself now.
But I love the journey -
The joy of discovering new things more than anything and growing as a person.QUOTE, David Sneddon
"God or No God?
Everyone knows -
We wont go through this alone." CELTIC CONNECTIONS Festival Club - Where the real action is – get to hear the artist performing that night – in a more relaxed atmosphere. Drawback is it’s late at night. The lights are dim, with occasional spotlights – the audience all ages. Ceilidh band Session A9 get everyone on the dancefloor. A fun experience. Well renowned fiddler from the Shetlands Aly Bain and Eddie Reader at the TransAtlantic Sessions at the Celtic Connections Folk Festival Glasgow Jan 2008 – show how much they enjoyed performing together at the Royal Concert Hall. Capercaille gig Old Fruitmarket, Karen Mathieson and Donald Shaw 2nd Feb 2008 Teenage Fanclub sold out gig @ Old Fruitmarket 26th Jan 2008 *'THE SUNDOWE' Review - written by John, Gerry & James KieltyWINNER OF THE QUEST FOR A NEW MUSICAL, and produced by Cameron Mackintosh. The Sundowe spins a tale of ghostly happenings… Set in the streets of Edinburgh, it is atmospheric and cleverly written. It is a fast-paced comedy-horror musical, with friendly vampires, ghostly happenings, the dead rising… and more. Excellent cast, lyrical writing, clever storyline, powerful tunes, well the ‘truest music’ Taken at the Kilsyth festival July 2007 of the lead violinist, Peatbog Faeires ceilidh band who combine brass & stings to unique effect.Edinburgh International festival one of the BIGGEST international festivals in the world. It offers a platform for new talent with art exhibitions, a Book Fair, theatre, music, dance and more. The Fringe festival takes to the high street....
