He began his musical career at 12 years old when he started playing the guitar. In the same year Bobby was asked to join an international gospel radio program where, for the next 4 years he sang and played on over 500 radio stations worldwide. After graduating high school, he formed his own band fronting a country rock group that toured the United States for the next 10 years. His band played concerts with stars such as Tanya Tucker, the late Ricky Nelson, Johnny Paycheck, the Kingston Trio, and The James Gang with Joe Walsh, to name a few. In 1982 he decided to further his education and began attending Grand Rapids Community College working on an Associate Degree in Music. His playing was recognized right away and he was chosen to receive the “Jimmy Forrest Jazz Scholarship” which paid his tuition in full. He performed in concert with some Jazz greats including the late Stan Getz. After earning his Associate Degree, he went on to finish his Bachelor of Music at Western Michigan University, where he graduated with honors. Bobby was chosen from a field of over 500 students to be included in the prestigious “Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities”. During this period he performed continually with his band and was awarded a personal letter of recommendation from President Gerald R. Ford for outstanding service to the community. Upon graduating he continued to front his band and in 1991 decided to move his family to Nashville, Tennessee. Upon arriving in Music City he immediately found work as a session picker. His most notable sessions were with Harold Shedd recording with Davis Daniels on the Mercury label. Due to his excellent acoustic work Bobby was asked to join a recording and touring act on the Epic/Sony label. After touring and recording with this act for two years he came back to Nashville to form a new band and seek his own record deal. Playing Lead Guitar in a band called Nevada, Bobby and the band won the admiration of Fred Kewely, the late Chet Atkins’ personal manager. The group signed a contract with Fred, however, after two years of hard work nothing came to fruition and it was time to move on again. In 1996 Bobby heard that The Coal Miners Daughter, Loretta Lynn, was forming a new band and he sought an audition. Upon hearing him play Loretta was impressed enough to hire him on the spot. Bobby has played Lead & Acoustic Guitars as well as the 5 string Banjo with Loretta for more than ten years now. Loretta is touring the United States and Canada where Loretta is still playing to sold out venues. Besides being an excellent Musician/Guitarist, he is also a great singer. He has sung Lead tenor and back up vocals for Loretta and many other artists. At the beginning of 2007 touring season, Loretta asked Bobby to be her new Band Leader. This is a position that Bobby still holds. |
