About Me

Shirl Wright, current East Village, New York resident, is a vocalist, composer and producer. She attended the University of the District of Columbia in Washington, DC and studied with pianist Maria Rodriguez. She also studied with acclaimed conductor, Ethel Bornstein. Although she was born in New York, Shirl spent her early years growing up in Pennsylvania. Her mother was an accomplished pianist and organist and Shirl can remember hearing classical as well as jazz music in her home when her mother rehearsed with the numerous bands she was associated with. Shirl's grandfather, Willie Irby was a trumpet and tuba player and played with various jazz bands but he could also be heard playing the guitar when he sat on the back porch to relax and kick back.Ms. Wright has enjoyed a distinguished career as a vocalist and composer. She has performed with world class musicians including: George Colligan, James Spaulding, Larry Willis, Richard Wyands, Rashid Ali, Alex Blake, Clarence Seay, Eric Allen, Marc Cary, Jesse Davis, Bruce Barth, Anthony Wonsey, Stephen Scott, Peter Bernstein and a host of other jazz musicians in and around the East Coast area. While living in Washington, DC, Ms. Wright was the premier vocalist for Difficult Run Jazz Band, an 18 piece band comprised of Foreign Service and Military personnel. Shirl has performed in and conducted numerous music workshops in New York, Philadelphia and Washington. She was a consultant for the play, "The Music of Art Blakey", written by Gregory "Chuckie" Royal, which ran for several months at the famed Birdland in New York.Ms. Wright's live performances have included: Le Retro(Papeete, Tahiti), Aaron Davis Hall(Harlem, NYC), the historic Lenox Lounge(Harlem, NYC), the Cotton Club (Harlem, NYC), Blues Alley (Washington, DC), Twin's Jazz Club (Washington, DC), B Sharp's (Tallahasse, FL) and many other venues in and around the United States.Ms. Wright uses her spare time to teach Jazz history and give vocal instruction to private students.Shirl is currently performing in clubs and writing a book about her many musical adventures.
