I use the blogs to try and vent my feelings about a lot of theings, so it's not a bad format to moan in. House Of Pain ‘Jump Around’A long, long time ago, there was a classic compilation series which massively resonated with music lovers throughout the world and established itself as the benchmark for good quality, well packaged compilations which were both conceived and compiled with love and which made a point of carrying absolutely no filler tracks.That series was Mastercuts.I was extremely proud of my ‘baby’. After a particularly fallow period in my music biz career, I finally got off my ass and spent the best part of a year researching the compilation market, compiling the first 50 potential Mastercuts albums and then hawking the idea around a plethora of record companies before the series finally launched in September 1990. It was created for all the right reasons and is the series I am probably most closely identified with - even some 17 years after it’s creation.So when the crew at Seamless contacted me and expressed an interest in doing a series which would update the Mastercuts concept in line with today’s market, to say I was interested would be an understatement. I loved the idea of providing twice as many tracks across even more genres and providing the same values for a better price. I’m a Northerner by nature and I love a bargain.Plus, in many ways this could be the last throw of the dice for the traditional music format since the onslaught of the digital revolution. Maybe the last chance saloon to physically buy a superior product, hold it in your hand, smell it, read the notes and saviour it forevermore for the rest of your life. How’s that for poetry? Plus, the idea of launching a brilliant new series at a time when the traditional formats are slowing down (or dying) really appealed to me in a perverse kind of way. Another typical example of my bizarre timing really......But I digress.For this is the evolution and creation of the Vintage Grooves brand. It was born this way.So here is the first album in the Vintage Grooves series: 80’s Old-Skool Hip-Hop Vol 1. Naturally it’s a killer. What else did you expect? The track-listing tells it’s own story. However, for those who like to dig a little deeper, we have naturally included my track-by-track breakdown which will give you a little bit of the history behind these glorious tunes and maybe even a couple of personalised memories. So read and enjoy.Every effort has been made to license the tracks which we wanted but, alas, things are just not so easy these days. The whole licensing process is like swimming in a moat filled with piranhas, crocs and stingrays ready to bite your ass anytime at their leisure. In other words, not easy.However, having said that, we really have no complaints. Vintage Grooves is already identifying itself as a series which will stamp it’s own seal of quality. Kurtis Blow - Save Your Love (for #1)Anyone venturing out into the bars and clubs in Hoxton, London these days is liable to find themselves experiencing something of a musical time-warp. As one walks through the maze of original Victorian streets marvelling at the creativity of urban renewal in what was once the industrial hotbed of London, it is apparent that a particular sound is pumping out of virtually every sound system. Rock solid machine-driven rhythms, ferocious basslines, metronomic percussion and a variety of classic synthesisers intertwine with urban raps and are skilfully mixed in and out of todays pumping beats. It’s very much the sound of urban London in 2007.And it’s the sound of 80’s Electro!Following on from Electro Sessions Vol 1, we decided to continue mining the delicious seams of the Electro groove which sound as relevent today as they did some 25 years ago, when they were first released.So where did this sound come from?Speaking from a personal perspective, as a relatively well-known D.J. at the top of his game throughout the 70’s and 80’s playing to a seriously contemporary crowd in the state-of-the-art club Leeds Warehouse, I became painfully aware that a musical revolution was brewing on the other side of the Pennines over in Manchester and Wigan. Playing to one of the most musically aware crowds in the UK was always nicely challenging but never more so then when a guy called Greg Wilson appeared on the scene playing what was then called ‘Robot Music’ by the Soul/Funk/Disco fraternity at the time. Whether I liked it or not, a musical revolution was happening and the traditional 4/4 Soulful Dance/Disco sound was about to be turned on it’s head. As a veteran soulboy at the time, I thought this was nothing short of anarchy!It seemed that every week my core crowd would return from a night out in Manchester asking for more and more ‘Robot Music’ and, over a period of a few weeks, I had to learn to programme these new beats in with the more regular fare in order to keep everyone happy. The nucleus of all this activity stemmed from a shop called ‘Spin-In’ in Manchester where Kev Edwards would happily hand over a pile of brand new U.S. import 12”’s with a gleam in his eye and tell me that these were all “massive records for Greg Wilson”.I eventually came round to the sound and soon the Warehouse’s legendary sound-system was belting out Whodini, Man Parrish, Newcleus and many of the other tracks featured on this album. In fact, Shannon’s “Let The Music Play” was the first record signed to the Warehouse’s own record label before it went on to become a UK Top 20 smash in late ’83.So welcome to the Electro Sessions Volume 2. Hideaway - Original Deep Dish 12" Special Edit - De'LacyDiscotheque is the definitive album series brought to you by Gut-Active Records, showcasing the most influential and culturally relevant clubs from around the world - clubs that had a massive impact on the development of music and club culture as weve come to know it.The project was lovingly put together by dance music connoisseur Ian Dewhirst (Mastercuts, Salsoul) and researched by acclaimed author Tim Lawrence (Love Saves the Day) for a definitive package that not only presents the music from these clubs but also documents the history and the impact these institutions left. The first album in the series is Volume 1:The Hacienda which will be followed up by Volume 2:Paradise Garage.Discotheque Volume 1:The Hacienda is endorsed by the clubs founders Tony Wilson and New Order while resident DJs, throughout the clubs existence, such as Greg Wilson, Mike Pickering and Graeme Park contribute to the selection of music.Influenced and inspired by the sounds of late seventies/early eighties New York and clubs such as Danceteria and Paradise Garage, New Order returned back home from their US tour along with Factory boss Tony Wilson in 1981. Armed with a bunch of records and a dream of opening a New York style club in Manchester, they set out on a hunt for the venue that would host their vision.Late in 1981 a lease was taken on an old yacht showroom on Whitworth Street West in a semi-derelict part of town. Making full use of the warehouse layout the industrial grinders, iron pillars and high ceiling interior design architect, Ben Kelly set about designing the ground breaking Hacienda, a very different place to most clubs in Britain.The first resident DJ at The Hacienda was Hewan Clarke who initially played a selection of songs popular on the New York gay disco scene such as Peech Boys Dont Make Me Wait (included on this album), D Train Youre The One For Me, Q The Voice of Q etc. It soon became clear that in order to get the old Factory indie crowd dancing he had to incorporate the experimental, emerging electro funk sounds of Grandmaster Flashs White Lines (also on this compilation) and Malcolm McLarens Buffalo Girls. As a self confessed crowd pleaser, Clarke also turned to electro pop by Yazoo, Heaven 17, Culture Club and last but not least New Orders Blue Monday which was guaranteed to fill the floor like no other thanks to Blue Monday (appearing in its instrumental version The Beach on this compilation) the straight goths of Manchester could shrug off their trench coats and hit the dancefloor!Live gigs were always a significant part of The Hacienda and within the first few months of its operation the club staged gigs (booked by Mike Pickering) that included Cabaret Voltaire, Orange Juice, A Certain Ratio, Yazoo, The Smiths, Grandmaster Flash, Echo & The Bunnymen, Culture Club and Curtis Mayfield amongst many others.From that point onwards the aim of the musical policy for The Hacienda was to play music that would attract the black crowd but would also appeal to the white indie scene. Mike Pickering envisioned a repertoire that would have The Peech Boys next to The Smiths and New Order. Therefore instead of having one DJ playing 6 nights a week he introduced Greg Wilson who pioneered the electro-funk New York sound with tracks like SOS Bands Just Be Good To Me and Shannons Let The Music Play as well as John Tracey who played a mad mix of Simple Minds, Iggy Pop, Sharon Redd and Willi Hutch!Eventually Mike Pickering took on the decks himself and launched his own night, Nude, mixing everything from soul, hip hop, electro, pop and indie. The night took off immediately and by 1986-87, Pickerings selections aligned with the shift in sounds, incorporating the first early Chicago house with home grown tracks by A Guy Called Gerald (aka Gerald Simpson) with Voodoo Ray and Pickerings own project TCoys Carino.The northern house scene picked up momentum and by 1988 The Hacienda brought Graeme Park on board along Paul Cons who launched Ibiza style parties inspired by Shoom and Hedonism in London. Ecstacy started to flow and the atmosphere at the club changed completely dancers, podiums, hands in the air and a fully packed Hacienda were experiencing their first Summer of Love.By 1989 everyone was a slave to the beat. Future DJ names such as Laurent Garnier, Justin Robertson and Sasha were Hacienda regulars and the club became an inspiration for house music producers as well as a platform for new house records to be tested out. Tracks such as 808 States Pacific State, Sueno Latinos Sueno Latino, Rob Base & Ez Rock Get On The Dancefloor and 128th Sreet Crew I Need A Rhythm were a fixture in Mike Pickerings and Graeme Parks sets.At the height of The Hacienda in the late eighties, Liam and Noel Gallagher had just started hanging out at the club. Mark E Smith of The Fall would also be there, nursing a pint and the Happy Mondays and their mates would be underneath the balcony surrounded by girls. The Charlatans and Inspiral Carpets were also hanging out at the club.Eventually drug gangs moved in and after a series of violent incidents and troubles with the police, Tony Wilson decided to close the club down in 1990. The Hacienda reopened with an airport style detector in May 1991 and continued to do business until 1997. During this period the club celebrated its tenth anniversary with guest DJ Frankie Knuckles and David Morales; survived Factory Records going into receivership; and bid farewell to Mike Pickering in May 1994. Following a series of annual losses the venue went into liquidation on June 1997. The last record played was the Salt City Orchestra Remix of Post Modern Sleaze by Sneaker Pimps.The Hacienda was run with endearing, exasperating, punk amateurism. Most nights it opened money was lost. Peter Hook once claimed that New Order would have been better off if theyd given ten pounds to every one that came to the Hacienda and sent them home.The Hacienda will be remembered primarily for its first seven years. During that period and way ahead of Ministry of Sound and Renaissance the Hacienda became the UKs first superclub even though it missed the opportunity to capitalise on the new dance market by either developing its own label or marketing the brand in ways other than just a club venue. Deconstruction records used the Hacienda as an experimental ground during their success years. They employed one of the clubs resident DJs, Mike Pickering who informed them about future dance hits and they went on to release compilations featuring the best of northern house, including Carino and Voodoo Ray and a selection of other home grown acts that had their roots at The Hacienda.Most of the stories on The Hacienda are mostly focused on the mental, ecstasy crazed summers of 1988/1989 and the parallel rise of Manchester bands such as the Happy Mondays and the Stone Roses. The lead-up period of 1982 1988 and the role of bands such as New Order and A Certain Ratio is more compelling. During this time The Hacienda became a ground where white and black music cultures co-existed, a place where indie met dance and moved into more experimental areas previously unexplored. This music is reflected on the track selections on this album which plot the transition from post-punk and American electro to Northern house. This perhaps is the most important legacy of The Hacienda.This double CD compilation takes the listener on a trip through the most influential club tracks from the 80s through to the mid 90s. With 12 versions of 23 tracks, many of which are rare and appearing for the first time on CD, this is the definitive collection for all the music purists out there be they young or old, if you werent there you still can be.Couldn't resist a plug for that! Should be in everyone's collection. The Paradise Garage and Studio 54 volumes will be out in early 2007 along with some other packages which I'm working on now!Anyway, here is a plotted history of who I am and what I'm about......ABOUT IAN DEWHIRSTIan Dewhirst started his D.J. career in 1971 at the age of 16 years old with a warm-up slot at Leeds Central for Northern Soul DJ Legend Tony Banks. Following several successful weeks of ‘warming-up’ Tony left the venue and Ian took over as resident at one of the North’s most respected Northern Soul venues.Following his success at Leeds Central, Ian started finding more and more Northern Soul U.S. imports and both his record collection and reputation started to grow. By 1972-1973 Ian secured several other residencies including weekly and bi-monthly all-nighters at Wigan Casino, Cleethorpes Pier and Sheffield Samantha’s. This was during the ‘golden age’ of Northern Soul where Ian discovered and played such records as The Carstair’s “It Really Hurts Me Girl”, The Tomangoe’s “I Really Love You”, Tobi Legend’s “Time Will Pass You By”, The Four Perfection’s “I’m Not Strong Enough”, Gerri Grainger’s “I Go To Pieces”, Lenny Curtis’s “Nothing Can Help You Know”, Clyde McPhatters’s “please Give Me One More Chance” and Yvonne Baker’s “You Didn’t Say A Word” among many others.Following his growing disillusionment at the way that record prices were escalating and the amount he was personally being charged for ‘unknown’ records, Ian decided to move to Los Angeles and search for Northern Soul rarities himself. So, in 1975 Ian moved to the U.S.A. and started hunting for rare up-tempo Northern Soul records. Within weeks he discovered many major rarities and new ‘unknown’ records including Willie Hutch’s “The Duck”/”Love Runs Out”, Judy Street’s “What” and literally hundred’s of other records which have since become Northern Soul classics.Whilst in Los Angeles, Ian became involved in co-producing a Motown medley disco record, which was eventually called “Uptown Festival” by the freshly formed group Shalamar. The record was signed to Don Cornelius’s Soul Train records where it topped the Billboard dance charts for 6 weeks, hit the U.S. top 20 pop charts and eventually sold one million copies around the world by the end of 1976.Ian returned from the U.S. after a highly successful 6 month stay and immediately returned to deejaying on the rapidly emerging Northern Jazz/Funk/Disco circuit with residencies at Leeds Central and all-dayers at Blackpool Mecca, Manchester Ritz, Nottingham Palais and Birmingham Locarno along with Colin Curtis, Ian Levine, Neil Rushton and Paul Schofield.In 1979, following his success on the Northern Jazz/Funk/Disco circuit, Ian was invited to become resident DJ at the U.K.’s first U.S. style dance club – Leeds Warehouse. He was taught to mix by U.S. DJ Greg James and with his new skills Ian started mixing more eclectic styles of music which included Disco, Funk, Jazz-Funk, Electro and other styles from 1979-83. Whilst at the Warehouse Ian also introduced Soft Cell’s Marc Almond to Gloria Jones’ “Tainted Love” which later went on to become a 34 million-selling worldwide hit for Soft Cell and the longest running record ever on Billboard’s U.S. Top 50 singles chart.In late 1983 Ian moved to London and commenced work with EMI Records as Head Of Club Promotion/A&R where he scored instant successes with Ashford & Simpson, Maze, Freddie Jackson, Lillo Thomas, Tavares and Diana Ross. During this period Ian also introduced the Pet Shop Boys to EMI where they shortly scored a worldwide No.1 hit with “West End Girls” and forged a successful, career thereafter. Ian also commenced a Saturday night DJ Residency at The Playground at The Lyceum Theatre in London with Rusty Egan and Steve Strange.Ian then moved onto Serious Records where he compiled and oversaw the Upfront and Best Of House series before moving to Island Records and overseeing Sly & Robbie’s only U.K. hit with “Boops (Here To Go)” and the signing of the Wild Bunch, who later mutated into Massive Attack and Soul 11 Soul.In 1990 Ian conceived and created the Mastercuts series which became the biggest-selling none T.V. advertised compilation series in the U.K. with such genres as Classic Funk, Classic Jazz-Funk, Classic P-Funk, Classic Mellow, Classic Mix, Classic House, Classic Electro, Classic Salsoul, Classic Rare-Groove etc, etc. During the period from 1990-1995 Ian did a number of prestigious guest slots on various Radio shows including Kiss FM and GLR.In 1998 Ian helped found Simply Vinyl where he re-released over 400 albums on 180 gram vinyl and over 80 12” Dance Classics with the S12 series.In 2003 Ian became co-owner of Suss’d Records and embarked on a huge re-release campaign for the legendary New York dance label Salsoul Records with over 90 releases in the last three years of operation.As a result of the renewed interest in 1970’s and 80’s dance music, Ian started to DJ again with residencies at The Salmon & Compass in Islington and The Medicine Bar in Shoreditch and assorted guest appearances at Turnmills in Farringdon, Pop, Herbal, Cargo and The New Marquee in Central London as well as occasionally heading up North to the Hi-Fi Club's 'Move On Up' New Years Eve do's. Great records are great records whenever they were made in my opinion.However, the other side of the coin is that I've been in the Music Biz for over 30 years now and so there's a professional side to my life which involves all the records I've ever worked in some capacity or other, whether it be A&R, Promotion, Marketing, Re-Issuing, Compiling, Sleeve Notes, Publishing etc, etc. This is the sort of thing I do. Television:I'm really not a massive TV fan. The things I watch regularly are few and far between. I'm not a coach potato.
