Boby Lapointe was born on April 16, 1922 in Pézénas in the South of France. His childhood was filled with pranks like painting the weathervane of the church neon green for Easter and shaving the tax-collector’s dog. When he came of age, Nazi Germany had invaded France and sent him off to a forced-labor camp. He escaped, twice, and found his way back to Pézénas in 1944. Boby is most famous for his music, cleverly arranged and his lyrics filled with puns and spoonerisms. In addition to his musical career, however, he also was an inventor and a mathemetician, inventing the automatic transmission (or at least the foundation for it) and developing a mathematical system called bibinary ( code bibinaire ). Nécrologie du journal Le Monde, 1er Juillet 1972: Le chanteur Boby Lapointe vient de mourir à Pézenas après une longue maladie. Il était âgé de cinquante ans. Après des études de mathématiques, il avait exercé plusieurs métiers, dont celui de monteur de télévision et d’homme-grenouille. Son humour, fondé sur les jeux de mots, les calembours insolites, les ruptures de rythmes, son irrespect goguenard correspondaient parfaitement à l’esprit "rive gauche" où il avait commencé et poursuivi sa carrière d’auteur-compositeur-interprète. Il avait également participé à plusieurs spectacles de Georges Brassens dont il était l’ami, et tourné dans Tirez sur le pianiste et Les choses de la vie. et de Georges Brassens: « Ce satané Boby Lapointe depuis qu’il a tourné le coin, à Pézenas comme à Paris, ses copains et admirateurs, ont du mal à s’y habituer. En ce qui me concerne, les soirs où son amitié et sa bonhommie me manque un peu, je fais comme rien n’était, j’écoute ses chansons pour qu’il continue à vivre le bougre et il continue.
