I've learned - That it's not what you have in your life, but whom you have in your life that counts. I've learned - That you don’t have to compare yourself to the best others can do. I've learned - That our background and circumstances may have influenced who we are, but we are responsible for who we become. I've learned - That two people can look at the exact same thing and each can see something totally different. I've learned – That your life can be changed in a matter of hours by people you don't even know. I've learned - That credentials on the wall, does not make a decent person. I've learned - That no matter how much I care. Some people just don't care back. I've learned - That it can take years to build up trust, and only seconds to destroy it. I've learned - That money is a lousy way of keeping score. I've learned - That believe in things because it makes sense to you, not because it was written in some special book or spoken by some important person. I've learned - That once a relationship is over, if you experienced more smiles than tears, then it wasn't a waste of time. I've learned - That I must never humiliate another person. Always give him an honorable way to back out of something and still save face. I've learned - That to ignore the facts does not change the facts. I've learned - That it is best to give advice in only two circumstances; when it is requested and when it is a life-threatening situation. The Gates of Paradise A soldier named Nobushige came to Hakuin, and asked: "Is there really a paradise and a hell?" "Who are you?" inquired Hakuin. "I am a samurai," the warrior replied. "You, a soldier!" exclaimed Hakuin. "What kind of ruler would have you as his guard? Your face looks like that of a beggar." Nobushige became so angry that he began to draw his sword, but Hakuin continued: "So you have a sword! Your weapon is probably much too dull to cut off my head." As Nobushige drew his sword Hakuin remarked: "Here open the gates of hell!" At these words the samurai, perceiving the master's discipline, sheathed his sword and bowed. "Here open the gates of paradise," said Hakuin. A Parable Buddha told a parable in sutra: A man traveling across a field encountered a tiger. He fled, the tiger after him. Coming to a precipice, he caught hold of the root of a wild vine and swung himself down over the edge. The tiger sniffed at him from above. Trembling, the man looked down to where, far below, another tiger was waiting to eat him. Only the vine sustained him. Two mice, one white and one black, little by little started to gnaw away the vine. The man saw a luscious strawberry near him. Grasping the vine with one hand, he plucked the strawberry with the other. How sweet it tasted! Learning To Be Silent The pupils of the Tendai school used to study meditation before Zen entered Japan. Four of them who were intimate friends promised one another to observe seven days of silence. On the first day all were silent. Their meditation had begun auspiciously, but when night came and the oil lamps were growing dim one of the pupils could not help exclaiming to a servant: "Fix those lamps." The second pupil was surprised to hear th first one talk. "We are not supposed to say a word," he remarked. "You two are stupid. Why did you talk?" asked the third.
