If Benjamin Christensen were a filmmaker today or if Icelandic composer Bardi Johannsson had lived in the 1920's, their collaboration would have been a perfect match. Now, thanks to this project, these two creative spirits have been brought together.Haxan, a bizarre curio, banned for many years for its depiction of devil worship and nudity, was chosen to be screened in 2004 at the Cinema "Forum des Images" along with an original composition by Bardi Johannsson, who performed with 2 violins, percussion and electronic programming. This was part of a series of early 20th century silent-film screenings, initiated by the French production company "La Lune Rousse".Following this experience, Bardi was offered to participate in the Reykjavik Winter lights festival and decided to contact Thorir Baldursson (an arranger of diverse orchestral pop and classical projects) in order to develop the arrangements for this event where an alternative version of Haxan was performed by the National Symphony Orchestra of Iceland (February 2005).Later that year, Bardi headed off to Bulgaria where he recorded the score with the Bulgarian Symphony Orchestra at the National Radio House of Sofia. The final production and some additional recordings were done in Iceland and the album was mixed in January 2006, some of the tracks on the album are a shorter version of the performed score.Haxan is a truly unique project infused with a poetic mystery that continues to stupefy.Here you can buy the HAXAN ALBUM online :
