About Me |
|
I know Nina Walsh. In this world of old bones and petrified music Nina is a composer, performer and producer of the first caliber. Through the cross-pollination of fate and her own gifts she began to blossom as an artist in London during the late eighties when bands like the Orb, KLF and Primal Scream began to turn music on its fat head for the first time in over a decade. Ninas first commercially recorded vocal performance was on the Primal Scream track 'Stuka', re-mixed by DJ and producer Andrew Weatherall. Nina and Andrew went on to set up and successfully manage two techno record labels,'Sabres of Paradise' and 'Sabrettes'. Last summer they collaborated again with Andrew and Keith Tenniswood's Two Lone Swordsmen outfit (performing a duet) on their album "From the Double Gone Chapel" on Warp Records and more recently on 3 new tracks from the new Swordsmen album, 'Wrong Meeting'.Nina met Alex Patterson of The Orb when they both lived in the same block of flats in Battersea. Together they co-wrote two tracks, 'Ghost Dancing' and 'Plum Island', both of which appear on The Orb's highly acclaimed album 'Cydonia'. They are currently in the process of writing and recording a new album together under the guise, 'Rootmasters'.Nina also runs an experimental underground label, C-PIJ Records, as an outlet for what she calls her "electronic dementia", a rare condition characterized by consistent flashes of creative brilliance. The label's first album, 'Wah/Fuzz/Swell', was preceded by four 7" singles.Yet another of Nina's collaborations over the past few years and continuing today is that with Italian industrial noise merchants Biomuse. This year Nina signed a deal with Malicious Damage Records who will be releasing her album 'Bright Lights' some time in September 2006.Not completely ditching her electronic grooming, Nina weaves her simple yet honest songs amid a backdrop of finger picked acoustic guitar and smatterings of old school electronica. Accompanied on cello, the songs are beautifully complemented courtesy of Audrey Riley (The Cure, This Mortal Coil, Test Department...). The album also features Nina's dentist, Gareth Thomas on vocals who has previously released a version of Tim Buckley's Once I Was, produced by Nina, through C-pij Records.Nina's singing is lovely and reminiscent of legends like Marianne Faithful, the difference being that Nina's feet are firmly planted in the artistic terrain of the 21st century. She's always in the here and now and at the same time taking a little peek into the future. You can buy the CD album, Memos by Nina Walsh at www.ninawalsh.com. Or at www.cdbaby.com. |
