About Me |
|
Buy tickets? Fuck yeah. So I ended up last week going to see HORSE The Band, who we’ve detailed on this blog in the past. Their show was great - the banter they had with the crowd, the way they dealt with hecklers and just the sheer energy involved in that show was one of the highlights of the show. But wait. I said one. There was another one? In fact, it was THE highlight for me on that night. For you see, I’ve heard many a time the name being bantered around, but I never actually had a chance to experience Wellington three piece This City Sunrise until the run up to the gig. In hindsight, I feel like a complete yutz - This City Sunrise blew me away, both visually and audibly. It’s hard to pigeonhole a band such as this into any set genre - they can at times possess a ruthless hardcore element not unlike the works of GlassJAw, yet have infection grooves laden throughout their debut EP, the simply titled “This City Sunrise” which conjure an almost power-pop sensibility. Of course, when you have songs such as “Duke Nukem Forever” and “Marble Zone” which include the lyrics “In my ruins where caterpillars roam/through waterfalls of fire…” (it’s a Sonic the Hedgehog reference, if the name didn’t give that away), then the sense of using the word “geek” or “nerd” as a prefix seems all the more tempting. Geek-Core…. Post-Nerdcore… whatever…. Tearing open their support slot for HORSE The Band, immediately myself and my plus one for the evening were amazed at just the sheer brute force the group had to offer - kinetic, like a rubber band - at times you’d worry if they’d snap and accidently hit someone or something in a state of wanton carnage. Though bassist Sam would violently hurl himself around with his lower-than-low slung bass the least worrying item to smash into someone’s face, there was this endearing aura about them. The band tell it like it is. The band play the stuff they like to play, and though all smiles off stage when we had the privilege to talk to him, on stage Sam called a spade a spade. Denouncing the corporate music machine that builds up bands automatically due to their nature and commercial viability rather than their integrity and diligent work - these were words that reverberated through the Transmission Room, especially to HORSE The Band, who know all to well about Doing It Yourself. Why they’re not bigger than they are is frightening. Is it a crime to actually have a legitimate opinion on what could be done to help the New Zealand music scene for bands that are overlooked? You couldn’t argue that they’re being held back because the sad story is that no one is paying them enough attention to hold them back - which can be also a blessing in many cases. They’re the closest thing to Reuben I can find in New Zealand, which is always a good thing. The fact they’re not afraid to speak out for the little guys is even better. But hey - singing about one of the hardest levels in Sonic the Hedgehog? That always helps. - Benjii, Bored House Wife Radio |
