| An Epitaph is written for people to read for an eternity!Epitaph was formed in April 1991 in Dumfries, Scotland. The group members were Duncan Beattie, Fraser Graham (both aged 15) and Cameron Findlay (aged 16). These school friends were brought together by their love of heavy metal. Inspired by their idols and motivated by their frustrations they decided to write and record their own collection of songs.
Early July 1991 saw the first proper recordings. Cameron used a drum machine as he did not yet have a drum kit, while with no microphones, Duncan had to "sing" over the top of the drum machine and Fraser's electric guitar, while recording was made on a simple tape recorder in Cameron's bedroom. Nonetheless songs such as Ninja and the punky Kill The Queen were first put on tape. Although the sound quality was not great these tracks marked the birth of Dumfries's most aggressive band. Further songs were recorded in August 1991 including the rock n' roll tune Trigger Happy Blues and the acoustic love song The Place That No One Knows. These tracks were all compiled to make an album distributed locally called Gravestone of Death (GOD).
In October new recordings produced a superior album, Savage Antichrist Temple Of The Apocalyptic Netherworld (SATAN), containing 17 new tracks. Improvements in sound led to a better balance between guitar, vocals and drums. Balls out thrash remained on tracks like All Things Dark And Evil and Sentimental Sickness. However Epitaph experimented with songs like the unique Serpentina while Another Lust Song showed how exciting recording songs can be! All three band members were active participants in the song writing process.
In November 1991, drummer Cameron left the band and after a long silence Acid Annihilation (AA), a new album emerges in February 1992. Once again Epitaph had delivered the goods. Come Move Your Ass featured some mean slide guitar; Dead Animals and Taking A Fit tackled such issues as cruelty to animals and the mistreatment of the disabled. Pill Overdose was an example of Epitaph's refusal to shy away from using complicated arrangements in recording. The version of Ninja you are hearing was recorded during these sessions. This time Fraser double tracked on guitar and drums, with regular vocal contributions too.
A compilation featuring all the above-mentioned tracks was released in April 1992 and sadly no further recordings were made.
This year sees the 15th anniversary of Epitaph and while the band was well known locally, this profile was set up to give the band a more lasting legacy.
