About Me |
|
Click here for the finest funky house mixes Hello all Name: Anthony Payne Location: Northampton, UK Kit: 2 x Vestax PDX-d3 Mk2s and a Stanton RM3 mixer About me as a DJ: I've been DJing on and off since 1998 when I got my first set of decks, a crafty pair of Soundlabs with a simple 2 channel Soundlab mixer. Despite the hindrance of my tools, it took only 9 months for me to enter my first DJ competition and win whilst studying at the University of Durham. This bizarrely lead to a stint editing live feeds of Newcastle United commentary for the half-time and full-time round ups on Century FM in Gateshead. At university I DJed regularly in various locations including the attempt of an impromptu set in the John Snow College halls of residence car park at 3 in the morning!!! This lead to me being thrown out of halls and shifted to George Stephenson College under the guise that I had "incited a riot". My favourite gig to date came also whilst at uni, when I played the second to last set in the main room of a boat filled with over 2200 people, mixing alongside Slinky and Tall Trees residents. Shortly after finishing at university I was unlucky enough to snap my humerus playing football. This setback combined with the concern about having to get a "proper job" lead me to concentrate on a career away from DJing. As a result I spent less and less time on my decks, until a friend encouraged me to start playing again last year. After recording a couple of sets I made the Deck Room website as a resource for friends to download my mixes and save me having to burn CDs all day long. It came as a pleasant surprise when the site got more popular and I was forced to massively upgrade my bandwidth within 2 months of launching. An invitation to play on an internet radio station and a gig from out of the blue later and I had caught the DJing bug again, resulting in playing on a number of internet radio stations before hooking up on a permanent basis with Soul-Satellite this year. As far as my musical tastes are concerned, I define myself as a funky house DJ although I'll spin anything that I'm into at the time as long as it sounds good. As a result my mixes never stay in the same place for too long. I'm not into mixes where every track sounds like the last, which is reflected in my mixes as I try to keep everything moving along, changing direction whilst maintaining the momentum of the music. The main thing is that it sounds good and people are enjoying it. As things stand I am looking to start getting a few gigs again as I simply love the thrill of playing to a crowd and have a few as yet unfulfilled ambitions when it comes to music. As for the future... who knows? Please give me a shout if you have something up your sleeve you think I might like to get involved with. About me generally: Born November 10th 1979 in Derby, I was brought up in Wollaton, Nottingham from the age of 1 until almost 16 before moving to sunny Northampton where I have lived (with the exception of my time at university) ever since. In Nottingham I attended the glorious educational establishments of Middleton Primary School and Nottingham High School, before moving on to the illustrious and delightful Mereway Upper School in Northampton (now Mereway Community College) and then eventually to the University of Durham, where I got my colours for football at John Snow College and my degree from George Stephenson College in a glorious mix up that could only ever happen at the Stockton Campus. As a person I have always been into football and music since an early age. On the football side I am a devout Nottingham Forest fan despite the fact that they're less entertaining and skillful than an average pub team these days. Meanwhile I still play local footy in a vain attemp to retain some level of fitness. On the music side, it all goes back to the Christmas shortly after my 5th birthday when I got my first "Ghetto Blaster". In its heyday, The Grundig Party Center was a glorious piece of electrical engineering featuring a tape deck, radio, graphic equaliser and a "Super Stereo" dial too!!! In fact it is still going strong to this day, running on the fuel of memories of tapes gone by... memories of truly magnificent artists such as Whitesnake, Billy Ocean, Mel & Kim, Kylie Minogue and the legendary Shakin' Stevens amongst many, many others. Similarly to in my early years, as I grew up my musical tastes remained as varied as ever. It was at about 13 years old I came across DJ mixed music, initially through the hardcore / rave / house tapes we were all copying at the time mixed by legends such as DJ Sy, Jumpin' Jack Frost, Carl Cox, Ellis Dee, etc. It was in my early teens that I also started getting in to hip hop, influenced by artists such as Naughty By Nature, Snopp Doggy Dogg, Dr. Dre, Tha Alkaholiks, Lords Of The Underground and Wu-Tang Clan. This ended up being more of a flirtation as hip hop seemed to lose a lot of its integrity in pursuit of a wider mainstream audience. Thoughout this time there was always an underlying theme of house music, which eventually came to the fore as I started going out pubbing and clubbing at the age of 16. It was at this age I attended a short DJing workshop where I learned a bit about the theory of DJing (it was theory to me anyway as I was totally rubbish). This culminated in me crashing and burning in my first ever mini-gig at the end of the workshop, having had about an half an hour total time on the decks ever. My decision to mix hip hop didn't exactly help me out either!!! Nevertheless this didn't phase me and I eventually got my first decks in early 1998 before upgrading to my current kit in the summer of 1999. These days I am a Regional Sales Manager for an exhibitions company having done cheeky stints selling video production, new media services and printed advertising. I have been in the exhibitions industry for the last 3 years and have to say it is fantastic industry to work in!!! I'm not sure what else to say right now, so please feel free to get in touch if you have any questions and I'll get back to you as soon as I can!!!
