| Cottage Printworks is a Screen Printing studio located in the Kensington neighborhood of Philadelphia. We are partners with The Simple Way and print a most of our stuff out of the basement of the house here on Potter Street. CPW began with a few simple stencils cut from cereal boxes. These stencils began to find their way onto patches, t-shirts, flower boxes, a few boarded up windows and doors and even our street sign that the city neglected to replace. Slowly we started getting into screen printing and with a generous grant we were able to start a company. Thanks, generous people!The focus of CPW has always been on justice and sustainability, not profit. Many of the shirts printed are recycled t-shirts. We purchase shirts at thrift stores and flip them inside out. The thought is that there is already so much being produced and wasted that it only makes sense to find a use for all this waste. Otherwise, we only use sweatshop free apparel including no sweat apparel, windjammer inc., and american apparel. It is our strong belief that people should be paid a living wage, so we are doing our best to live into that dream, creating a few small, dignified jobs amid an industrial wasteland where we have lost over 200,000 in the past four decades. Instead of sitting around complaining we have decided to start a business that can hopefully contribute to making a better world. Significant portions of our profits are given to The Simple Way to use in the neighborhood and to give away to other great folks around the globe.
