| Some places have become far removed. It is more difficult to remember grandpa pickin' and grinnin' with his country kin, stirring up laughter while brother and sister leapt from one hay-bale to another. Barn-folk; people living in the simplest of terms, gathered together in celebration of life. Through music they were able to express this contentment, plucking on banjos and slapping their knees to create songs that would shake the dust from the roof-beams. These memories, along with others, ripened by the passage of time, are displayed in the organic nostalgia of Jon Thompson's solo project. Cabin Neighbors' sound has resulted from a childhood steeped deeply in the exploration of nature and also from early exposure to more rustic and traditional styles of song. Jon's compositions, although they exhibit exceptional innovation and display a keen understanding of the 'technical aspect' of music, feel eerily natural and childlike. Notes string together to form haunting (yet strangely appealing) reveries of a time long-since passed: an era of innocence, national parks, home cooking, disappearance among fields of golden grass, imaginary lifetimes and apple orchards. It is through this eclectic upbringing that Jon is able to combine basic, elemental influences with future-forward electronic components to integrate the incorrupt world with the synthesized. The result: fluid and meaningful cacophony. | |
