E N G L I S H Q: So youve been an acoustic lap steel player from the beginning? A: No. Originally Im a drummer, record producer and songwriter here in Brazil. Q: So what the hell is a Weissenborn? A: An acoustic Hawaiian lap steel guitar made by Hermann Weissenborn in Los Angeles, CA. in the 1920s and 30s. Q: So you must really love the sound of these guitars to have based your solo album on them. A: Yes. Theres an eerie, haunting quality to them that transcends the notes, very much like a human voice, only without the dumb lyrics that are usually associated with the human voice. People seem to go berserk with lyrics that repeat endlessly I love you or lets dance, that is truly incomprehensible to me. I love sound without necessarily having words plastered onto it. Q: Whats the name of your album? A: Adeus Paraíso (Goodbye Paradise). Q: So whats THAT supposed to mean? A: Kind of like a paradox. Even a perfect place will bore us eventually if there isnt a way out. Thats because there can be no perfection. Life is this endless, almost hopeless search for something to transcend it. Q: So these are all your songs? A: Yes. Except Make Me a Pallet on Your Floor which is a traditional piece I arranged. Q: I hear you are an aikido blackbelt? Is it something to beat up people in the street with? A: Absolutely not! Aikido is to martial arts what bebop is to improvisational music. Its the highest form of aesthetical and spiritual practice. Its a martial art where you use your opponents attack against himself, bouts or competitions are forbidden and you are trying to harmonize yourself with the ki (energy) of the universe. Q: Who is singing with you on Trem do Horizonte? A: Milton Nascimento. Q: Isnt he something else? A: You betcha! P O R T U G U Ê S P: Então você toca o violão slide desde o início da sua carreira? R: Não. Comecei como baterista (Cazuza, Marina Lima), produtor de discos (Lulu Santos, Zélia Duncan) e compositor. P: Que raio de instrumento é um Weissenborn? R: Um violão de colo havaiano que é tocado com uma barra de metal fabricado pelo Hermann Weissenborn em Los Angeles, CA. No início do século passado. P: Puxa, você deve realmente gostar do som destes violões para basear o seu primeiro disco solo neles. R: Sim. Existe neles uma qualidade misteriosa e envolvente que transcende as notas sendo tocadas, algo parecido com a voz humana, só que sem as letras cretinas acompanhando. As pessoas parecem sentir frenesi com letras de música que ficam repetindo infinitamente eu te amo ou vamos dançar, isto é algo que não consigo entender. Eu adoro sons, sem necessariamente ter que ter palavras emplastradas neles. P: Qual é o nome do seu disco? R: Adeus Paraíso. P: E o que é que ISSO quer dizer? R: Um tipo de paradoxo. Até o lugar mais perfeito irá nos entediar se nele não existir uma porta de saída. Isto é porque a perfeição não é alcançável. A vida é uma infinita busca por algo que venha a transcendê-la. P: Então, estas músicas são todas suas? R: Sim. Exceto Make Me a Pallet on Your Floor que é uma peça de domínio público em que fiz o arranjo. P: Você é parceiro da Zélia Duncan em quase todos os seus maiores sucessos, como Catedral, Enquanto Durmo e Me Revelar? R: Sim. Eu faço as músicas e ela as letras. P: Ouvi falar que você é um faixa preta de Aikido. Isto é algo para cobrir de porrada em quem for mexer contigo na rua? R: De forma alguma! Aikido está para as artes marciais como o bebop para a música de improviso. É o que há de mais sofisticado em disciplina ou prática espiritual. É uma arte marcial na qual você aproveita a força do seu oponente contra ele mesmo, qualquer tipo de competição é proibida e onde o objetivo é você se harmonizar com o ki (energia) universal.
