I'd like to meet: The Toronto Rap Project takes an intimate, inside look at the independent urban music scene in Toronto. With Toronto’s surge in gun crime during 2005, the politicians and media have pointed the finger of blame at rap music and the gangster culture it may inspire. Has the attention on gangster rap overshadowed the positive aspects of a complex hip hop culture? Is it rap or media glamorization of violence – that plays any part in influencing crime on the streets? Filmmaker Richard Budman addresses these questions as the documentary journeys into diverse neighborhoods from downtown Toronto, the challenged neighborhoods of Jane-Finch, Cataraqui Park in Scarborough, to the much debated 50 Cent concert in Toronto. The Toronto Rap Project features high profile interviews from politicians, police, and the media. Budman’s documentary tells the story from the point-of-view of the rapper – the ones who truly understand and appreciate the complex urban culture of rap.
