The Boyle Heights Latina Independent Film Extravaganza (BHLIFE) is the first film festival to focus on the works of U.S. Latina directors. The mission of the festival is to build a network of Latina filmmakers that will draw attention to the growing number of Latinas working behind the camera. The films of these women constitute a body of work that acts as a powerful statement against the stereotypical portrayals of Latinas on screen.
The films featured in previous festivals came from local Boyle Heights artists as well as from filmmakers representing diverse Latino communities throughout the country. The cities represented include New York, Chicago, Boston, Tucson, Houston, Austin, San Francisco, Oakland and Los Angeles among others. We are proud to showcase these films here at CASA 0101 and include this work as part of the burgeoning artistic renaissance that is developing just east of the Los Angeles River. |
