| Jeremy Yocum and the Last Rounders rose from the ashes of Brooklyn-based Oceanographer to reform as a country-tinged quartet. And what else should you really expect from Yocum, who has Texas roots, a professed love for Hank Williams and George Jones, and a dog named Emmylou? Being that Oceanographer was best categorized as “shoegaze”, this is mellow, mellow country folk that focuses on the melody, not least because there is neither bass nor drums in the quartet’s current line-up. Jeremy Yocum leads the band with vocals and guitar, while fellow Oceanographer-alum Eric Elterman shares vocal duties and adds understated viola fiddling. Mattley Mountain and Brian Hersey round out the Rounders with harmonica and rhythm guitar respectively. All together, the Last Rounders create atmospheric country in line with Iron and Wine and Norfolk and Western, with lyrics that plumb the bottom of the whiskey barrel for inspiration. The group is currently in the studio putting finishing touches on their LP Sound of the Wind... —Callie Enlow, The Deli Magazine (We’ve since added Anna Denbo (of Inlets, Midnight Risers) on piano and banjo, Derek Milhem on slide guitar, his brother Riley Milhem on bass, Andrew Mendenhall (of Money Paper Hearts) on drums, and Greg McMullen (of Hula) on pedal steel.) |
