About Me |
|
Nightmare on Sesame Street was a rowdy hardcore punk band that played around Oxford, Mississippi from 1987-1989 Although N.O.S.S. was not the first Oxford punk band (that honor goes to 4 Dead Fish), they were by far the most well known outside the area. N.O.S.S. released two cassette tapes in 1988, "A Musical Prelude to the Extinction of Football" and "Let's Smash The Klan," both homemade, do-it-yourself releases. The tapes recieved good reviews in the national punk media like MaximumRocknRoll and Flipside, and the band actually sold quite a few copies throught the mail. A typical Nightmare on Sesame Street show consisted of about ten songs, or twenty minutes of hardcore peace punk music, complete with Sesame Street dolls, masks, speeches, and propaganda. Guitars were smashed, bodies rolled and slammed around, and mindless conformity was spat upon. N.O.S.S.'s classic material includes "Society Sets The Stereotype," "Selective Service," and "Defend Your Future" but the ever popular sing-a-long, "Drinking is Your Way of Life" will always be remembered as their biggest hit. Tait Graves (guitar) and Gentry Webb (bass) were the teenage masterminds behind the N.O.S.S. revolt. They recruited two different singers (Chris Robertson and Ji Hoon Cho) and three different drummers (Mike Featherstone, Oliver Gayken, and Kwasi Buffington) in their fourteen month campaign. N.O.S.S. pumped a lot of energy into the virtually non-existent music scene in Oxford in those days. They helped motivate and organize house parties and underground shows, and helped to start Assault (with intent to free) fanzine. They were also the very first of a long line of punk bands to play at The Hoka Theatre. Gentry Webb is now the guitar virtuoso of the punk metal band The Cooters . Chris Robertson lives in the Bay Area and is getting married in October. Kwasi Buffington lives and records music under the moniker Mr. Moody Hyadd in Chicago. It is rumored that Tait Graves is an attorney in San Francisco, CA. The whereabouts of the other members of Nightmare on Sesame Street is unknown. |
